drinking too much
« on: February 05, 2015, 08:13:35 am »
Ddd1 has always been at bad eater. However I'm sure she drinks too much sge finishes one cup then automatically asks for another.  She might have about 7-9 cups a day. I just measured and there is 9oz in a cup. If tell her no she has a total meltdown and cries saying that she is thirsty.

What is she drinking? Some people do naturally drink more than others - for example I'd probably average 3l a day if I measured it.

She has milk in the morning and before bed.  Then the rest it water sometimes with a little but of juice but usually just water. I worked it out yo be around 2.7 litres a day ish. I just wonder if that's why we have bad eating  oz she's already full.

Wowza, that is a lot. It could well mean she feels full.

When I looked up the NICE guidelines on bedwetting, they recommended kids of around 6 drinking 1000-1400ml a day, so it might well be less for her age.

Just found it. It should be 1.3litres so she is having more than double.  So what do i do when she is crying that she wants a drink?

I don't know, I'm sorry.

Is she old enough to sit down and tell her that she can drink X amount (show her the cup) in the morning and Y amount (again show her the cup) in the afternoon but no more?

I wouldn't mention food though, maybe tell her that it is the right amount for her body.

Could she be confusing hunger with thirst?

Liquids will fill her tummy quickly so she may need a bit of re-training so her tummy knows food is what she needs to fill it!

Will she take some fruit if you offer that instead - or even a fruit puree pouch?

Spencer drank loads around the 2.5/3 mark...and was peeing so much that I did have the doctor check her over...a quick urine sample and blood sugar check was all they did and it was all fine. They did not have me limit her drinking, but she was eating reasonably well (for her anyways!) at the time. It stopped after 6-8 months, now it is hard to get her to drink!

When I give her a drink with her meals she will tell me she is having a drink first. Finish all if that then eat s tiny bit of her food. She would eat fruit all day especially watermelon.

Does she drink between meals? It might be a good time to start offering a drink after you've put the food on the table (5 minutes in, 'oops I forgot the drinks!' kinda thing), plus have a cup that she can't carry around.

You sound like you are really more worried about her eating though. I'd recommend Ellyn Satter's books if you can get hold of one.

She pretty much has a drink all the time .She drinks from a straw cup so I will switch to an open cup. But yes it is more the eating I'm worries about and thought the drinking might be causing it. Had a wee look does Ellyn Satter have a few books?

Yes, she does. I've read the Secrets one but they all have the same principles in them.

She only needs about half her weight in ounces of water... My 2yr old is 28lbs, so he should be getting 16oz (2cups) a day. He does not drink that much, but we still BF and I don't worry much.
