Amount of awake time between nap and BT
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:56:12 pm »
Hi ladies,
My son is 25 months and we are having some sleep issues so I know it's time for some tweaking. He was ill for 2 weeks and still not 100% so I know that plays a small role, but I believe our main issue is that his time after nap and BT is too long.

My question to you all, is about how long of an A time does your LO get before bed? I know there are a lot of variables but I just want an average. I've tried to look at a lot of these posts and it seems like 4 hours is pretty common.

We are having NW and EW and he's waking up hysterical and then calms himself and won't go back to sleep. I'm trying to figure out what needs tweaking first...

We are about to have a time change in 2 weeks so that will shift his wake ups to an hour later but it's not going to change the issue of why this is happening. Just want to nip it before it gets worse! Thanks!!

My DD just turned 26 months old and her routine is usually:

WU 6.30 - 7am
Nap about 12.15 or 12.30pm (varies between about an hour at nursery to 2 and a quarter hours at home)
So WU at home usually 2.30pm
Bedtime 7pm (a bit earlier on nursery nights)

Thank you BeeAnn! That helps.
Your LOs naps are longer and she has a shorter awake time before bed so with your example, I do probably need to have BT be earlier. Thanks again!

My DD is 23 months and her routine is:

Wu 6
Nap 1-2
BT 7

I think she's lsn though, anymore than than the hour nap or a shorter A time to bed and we get EW.

Thank you! That's my issue...I don't know if he's getting too much or too little sleep. He's very touchy with sleep and if things shift at all, he gets all messed up. You'd think I would have it wired by now!!

I'm assuming from the crying/screaming wake ups that he's OT vs when he wakes happy during NW and EW which usually is UT from too much napping.

He was up at 5:00am today (screaming) and then settled and babbled until I got him at 6:30am. I did nap at 12:00pm and he fussed for a bit and fell straight asleep! Hoping for a solid nap, then earlier BT and maybe that will get him caught up on sleep.....hopefully. I'll shoot for having him asleep (or at least in bed and calmed) by 7:00pm tonight.

You all sharing your routines really help! Keep them coming :)

He woke up happy but only slept an hour and 15 mins....
With him up at 1:15pm, is 7:00pm the suggested BT. I'll try and even lay him down a bit earlier if I can.

I know he's also working on his 2 year molars as well so Im keeping that in mind as well...

For us we tend to stick to our usual BT even if we get an early wu or shorter nap but that's because she doesn't tack on and being consistent helps get her back on track quicker.

Maybe try laying him down at 6.30? Is 7 his usual BT? Does he tack on?

I would do 6.30pm but my DD is quite HSN and does usually tack on.

He usually tacks on but not always. His BT has been 7:30 for awhile now but it was 7:00 at few nights last week when he was sick. Him being sick threw our whe routine off since I was just trying to get him to sleep as much as possible.

I'll lay him down between 6:30/6:45pm and see how that goes. We are headed out to my MIL now so hoping to hurry and get back in time to bath, settle and bed on time

I just put him down at 6:40pm. He seems wide awake....worried this may backfire! He's just in his bed talking and singing. Fingers crossed for a 11/12 hour night....

Today has been much better. Thank you both for sending me your routines. It really did help seeing what other LOs are doing at this age. Pulling the BT forward did help last night!

I'll try it for a few days and see how things go but so far, so good! Xx

Not so much better this morning :(

Any of you know why he would be waking up screaming or yelling? He woke up at 1:00am and just fussed and went back to sleep. But then at 5:30am he woke yelling. I calmed him down by talking to him on the monitor and he fussed and then calmed pretty quickly. But I thibk he's too awake now to go back to sleep.

Is that signs of a night terror? Anything else it could be?

I just read a sticky on night terrors- that's not what it is at all.

Maybe nightmare? Anything else?

He is just talking now- never went back to sleep...

Please help. He's up screaming from his nap now too. What am I doing wrong?? He woke right at an hour and screaming bloody murder?

Our routine was:
Up-7:00-7:30
Nap 12:30/1:00-2:00ish
BT 7:30/8:00

He got sick for 2 weeks and was getting up at 5:00am because of diarrhea in his diaper. Everything was chaos and now he's well and trying to make things right again and I cant. Please help. He's clearly OT and I'm sure im doing the UT/OT thing again.

Now our day looks like:
Up 5:00/5:30am screaming (with 1 NW usually)
Nap 12:00pm ish (usually an hour or so but wakes up screaming)
BT 7:00

After reading a lot of posts, I thought the A time before bed was too long (which I'm sure it is) but then I read other posts that were advising to push out Nap and BT, etc. I'm desperate to get bad on a good routine. This had been 3+ weeks of chaos and I don't know how to get out. No clue when to do BT for tonight...
