Clogged milk duct?
« on: February 17, 2015, 14:26:10 pm »
My left breast is sore on the side and top. It doesn't feel warm to the touch and I don't have a fever but I'm wondering if that what I have and this is the early stages? Ds had had a rough few nights and has been nursing more than normal...can that cause it? I had one with dd but didn't know it until just my t shirt touching my breast was painful so I don't want it to get that far. Any thing I can do now to keep it from getting worse?

You can use cold compresses, hand express some milk off, let DS take it!

Just replied to your thread on NWs and all together this does sound like a GS.  So hopefully everything should come right in a few days.  I would try offering a top up feed or two during the day to get his daytime calories up, and that will also help reduce any oversupply.

This might help for information on plugged ducts http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

With me, warm compress/hot shower and nursing frequently on /pumping that side help. You can put a warm compress and then nurse/pump while gently massaging it in a downward motion. Hope you feel okay

I'd be careful about extra pumping - that's just going to create extra supply and make the blockage worse.  Hand expresses or top-up feeding might be best.  The cold compresses shrink the tissue and discourage production (a tip from our wise BW Shivi).

No, it'll just slow down any over production. Don't worry about it undermining supply!  It's just while you're feeling tender.

Massage the sore spot gently when feeding and try different positions especially with his chin pointing at the blockage.

Did it come on when you were pumping lots? I find the pump doesn't empty all the milk ducts like my babies did so whenever I missed feeds and pumped instead I had blockages which only eased with feeding baby directly.

It's all gone..whew!!! I massaged the crap out of it all day on Monday (or whenever it was lol) and it felt tons better the next day and was completely gone the day afyer. I'm thinking it was bc we went away over night and I nursed ds at 330 pm and only pumped twice  before he nursed again the next day at like noon.
