Looking for suggestions/advice 20 month old
« on: February 22, 2015, 01:52:22 am »
Hi there, long time follower first time poster here. I have a 20 going on 21 month old in the next week and I'm hoping I can get some advice on his current schedule.

730-800 wake
1230 nap
7 in bed

His naps are usually 2.5 hours, 3 Max and if it's anything under two he's crabby shortly after waking. High sleep needs.

For the past two weeks I've noticed some naps getting shorter and if he takes a long nap he'll take 30 min to fall asleep at bedtime when normally it's no longer then 10 and he'll wake up an hour earlier in the morning. I'm starting to suspect he's getting too much sleep in a day and he'll wake up early, take a short nap, go to bed early then will compensate his own sleep debt the next day by waking up normal, taking a good 2+ hour nap and going to sleep normal. It's all very confusing lol

I hope I made enough sense to get some feedback and suggestions.

Much appreciated.

Hi, I don't have any experience of high sleep needs children  (both of mine are low sleep needs, one spectacularly so), but it does sound to me like your LO is starting to need a bit less day sleep.  Though if he's catching up from a shorter night the next day / night I probably wouldn't worry too much about it unless his nights are getting super short and he's getting into a pattern of continuous short nights which you can't break.

If it is turning into more than just the occasional earlier wake up, one thing you could try is shifting his nap back a bit by 15 minutes, and keeping his A to bed the same. For example, up until this age I started having to always wake my daughter by 3pm in order to preserve nights, no matter when she fell asleep. Her bedtime was 7.30 at this age,  so basically she needed around 4.5 hrs A time in the afternoon. I'm pretty sure that soon after this she started needing an even shorter nap and longer afternoon A time.

Like I say, though, my two are LSN, so you might want to hold off and see what parents of other HSN kids say.

My 20 mo los routine looks the same! Up by 730 ish nap from 1230-2 his naps are typically a bit shorter than yours can be 1 hour usually 1.5 and once in a while 2 hrs if he's exhausted but he's also taking about 30 mins to fall asleep at night and it was always about 10 mins. And he's also starting to wake early befire 7! I do make sure he's up by 2/230 as to not delay bedtime any longer than it already is. But even when his nap is an hour im still getting the same long windown for bed. I'm thinking may maybe sleeps needs are changing but I'm hesitant to push bedtime any later. I'm hoping it's just a phase for the both of us :)

It's not the first time I've heard of 20 month olds going silly with their sleep out of the blue. Hopefully it is just a phase, like you said. Comforting to know I'm not alone! You always have to wonder when you haven't changed anything what the heck is going on :)
