I pick him up and if he isn't to mad he will lay his head on my shoulder. I will stand like that for a few minutes untill he is calm and than put him back in bed.
Lately he is really mad at first, points at the door. I'll wait for him to be done with being mad, next he settle's like above.
Listening to his cry doesn't really help. He mostly screams as loud as he can. A boy thing? He is LOUD!
Maybe just a stroke over his head when he is really mad? I've tried to not go to him but he can keep up the cry-quiet-cry-cuiet for a loooonnnng time.
Its a constant battle between giving him a chance to settle/don't go to him and go and let him know he isn't alone. A motherheart kind of thing...
