Starting out at 9 months?
« on: March 25, 2015, 09:52:02 am »
Hi Everyone  :)
My DD is 9 month old and I've been battling with EMW for a while now. I've come to learn that she's a baby who needs 11 hours a night instead of 12. She's currently follows a different  routine but I feel it's not working for us anymore. The last couple of days shes been going to bed at 6:30pm but waking at 5:30am (so having good 11 hours.) I would love to aim for a 7:30pm bedtime to see if this would help her sleep until 6:30am. I've read the BW book and I know that the MN is a long one...but I get so confused as I've read that a longer MN can cause EMW. I don't really know where to start tbh. She's on 3 milk feeds a day 6:30am, 2:30/3:00pm and 6:30pm. We are also doing BLW which she is doing really well with. Her current routine looks like this.
6am WU
6:30 milk
8 am breakfast
9:30am MN 30 mins max.
11:45 lunch
1pm LTN
2:30/3pm
3pm milk
5 pm Tea
5:45 bath
6:30 milk
6:30/7pm bed.
I'll also add that she shares a room with her 3 year old sister (she's a very good sleeper and never wakes up), Her room is still very dark in morning and the temperature is just right.

Any advice would be great Thanks  :)

Hi there :)

I really think it depends on the LO whether a long morning or afternoon nap is more suitable. If you are struggling with EW moving the first nap later is sometimes helpful. However, in your position I don't think it is so much about moving naps or switching long for short, more that you would like your entire day shifted day an hour so that WU is 6.30, meals, snacks and milks all move too, BT 7.30.  Usually I'd advise shifting the entire routine 15 mins holding for 2 days then shifting the whole thing again another 15 mins and so on until you have achieved a full 1hr shift...
...but you're in luck.  The clocks change this coming weekend so even if you do absolutely nothing to your DDs routine she should wake at 6.30am new time (same as 5.30am old time).  Remember you will need to give feeds etc at the new time which will be a change for *you* but actually not for *her* (when mine was little I wrote down the times in advance so I didn't get confused).

hope this helps
Let us know how it goes and do post if you need further help with the routine :)

What did you think about just holding tight and waiting for the clock change hun?  That's what I'm planning to do with my early riser, his normal is 5.30-6am WU with a 6.30pm BT, from Sunday we are just going to do everything an hour later on the clock so BT 7.30pm (no change to his body clock) for hopefully a 6.30/7am WU.  I wouldn't push things too much, you'll get OT EWs.  Your routine is fine, it's just too early.  Let DST do the work xx

I'm on count down to the clocks changing I'm praying that it will solve to EW.
I fed her at 6:30 and changed her and left her and she finally fell asleep at 7:10 am but I woke her at 7:30am. I've managed a MN at 10 am today so hopefully it will help to push things along.
I've been reading about the Wake to Sleep method, I'm thinking of trying this if the clock change doesn't work.

I'll keep you posted xxx

Hmm, not sure I would use W2S in this instance. It is for extending sleep and training LO to sleep longer. You already said she does well on 11 hr nights as this is her need, not 12, so I don't see that attempting to extend is going to help really.
I would suggest if clock change doesn't shift every thing to shift the entire routine in 15 min increments.  We can help with more detail if you end up needing it.
FX the clocks help :)

6:35 Wake up!!  ;D ;D

I really hope it's not a one off. Yesterday routine was good:
5:35 WU
6:30 changed and fed back to bed.
7:10 back to sleep
7:30 I woke her up.
8:20 breakfast
10:00-10:30 morning nap
11:45 dinner
1:30 milk
1:40-3:15 afternoon nap
3:40 snack
5:30 tea
6:00 bath
6:55 milk
7:15 bed (fell asleep quickly)

Thanks for all your advice, let's hope she keeps it up.
