What happens to nap length as 13mo ages?
« on: April 05, 2015, 20:53:38 pm »
Hello, just wondering what to expect from my dd regarding her naps as she ages. She's taking one nap a day for 3 hours (3&1/2 hours if day after nursery when she's exhausted!). Will the nap just get shorter and shorter? When do they usually stop napping?
How long is too long to nap for?
Thanks x

Wow those are big questions!! ;D ;)

Will the nap get shorter?  Not necessarily.  Some LOs will naturally shorten their naps, others will need it shortening for them (ie waking them up) to preserve night time sleep.  A small number may keep a long nap right up to the point of nap dropping but those LOs would generally be having much shorter nights as a result.

There is a wide range of ages for the 1-0 to happen, and it can be a long drawn out process for many.  I would say average age is probably somewhere around 3 for the nap to go, but can be anywhere from maybe around 2yo or even slightly younger for very LSN LOs, to up to 5yo!  It very much depends on sleep needs and lifestyle, for example in some cultures many LOs would stay up very late into the evening so may keep a daytime nap for much longer, whereas in places where LOs are usually in bed for 7pm or thereabouts the nap may go sooner and sleep may be consolidated into a longer night.

You know the nap is too long when you have problems with night sleep - so early wakings (where LO is happy and raring to go for the day), long happy NWs or problems falling asleep at bedtime leading to short nights.

So in short - the only thing you can really expect is that at some point the nap will go away ;). How that happens is very variable but please post here any time you run into problems and we will try to help!

Ha! Apparently I always asked 'why/how..' at School so I guess it's stuck with me ;-)

Good to know what might lay ahead and I'm thinking of trying for baby number 2 this June and will definitely be following the baby whisperer routine from birth (only found it later on with my dd).

Touch wood/rabbits foot etc.. my dd sleeps through the night and is waking between 0630-0645 hungry, has some milk and goes back to sleep. If she has been at home with me and so well rested will sleep until about 0710-0730 and if exhausted because she has been at nursery will sleep until 0800 or even 0830. She used to sleep until 0800-0830 with out the wake for milk at 6-ish. Do you think it's a habit? or genuine hunger as she'll go back to sleep? She is a child with a big appetite and really enjoys her feed.

Her schedule at the mo is:

Wake 0700 (as above)
Nap: 12noon for 3 or 3+1/2 hours *
Bed eyes closed asleep 0730ish

*For the last two days she has changed the time of her nap from a 3hour A time to going to be at 12 noon, after lunch.

Thanks for your advice :-)

Hi Jessmum, think I might have asked this before, and apologies if I have..can you please tell me how long a 14mo should be napping for (she has one nap in the day). She was napping for 3 hours, which is too long for her now as she starts wanting play when I'm trying to put her to bed. We let her sleep today for 2+1/2 hours and she was playing in her bed at bedtime so I think that was too long swell. I'm going to start capping the nap but not sure at how long, what would you advise? thanks :-)

If you've only just cut to 2.5h I would stick there a few days, and then if you are still having issues cut by 15 mins at a time and hold again for a few days to see if there is a difference x

Ok will try that thanks.
Bouncing on her bed, trying to make me laugh at bedtime is UT isn't it? Rather than OT?

If she's napping well and no NWs/EWs yes I would say UT most likely x

Yes she naps well thankfully.
She has started waking once in the night but I wonder if she is teething? She's previously STTN so I hope she'll go back to that.

She wakes at about 0630am (sometimes nearer 7) which I would love to be later but I guess if she has gone to sleep at 1930 I can't really expect her to sleep longer? And looking at threads 0630 seems an average time for babies to wake so perhaps I shouldn't consider that as an early waking? x

No anything over 10-10.5h is a decent nights sleep.  I suspect she may sleep a longer night with a shorter nap though :)
