40mins naps - adjust A time?
« on: April 11, 2015, 10:45:20 am »
Hi, we are having a string of 40mins naps today. What should I be doing for the next nap? Pull back A time due to short nap or push through with typical A time? Are these nap lengths typically a sign  LOs are UT and need a slight bump up in A times?

Hi Jen! Hope you and your new LO are doing well! Typically, a 40 minute nap will indicate UT and maybe need a 15 minute A time increase. This was the general rule with both of mine. Most LOs will do well to have about 20 minute taken off the next A time to help keep OT at bay. I would start with the 1st A time and push it out by 15 minutes tomorrow to set the day up right. If you get a good nap, I would go ahead and push the next A as well, the same amount, and then see what you get. How is LO upon waking, crying? Babbling? Hope this helps, you are doing great!

Hi Maryn!  Thanks for your reply.  I think we are headed into the 4hr EASY and she is transitioning.  So yesterday after the first 40mins nap, I tried the same A time and got another 40mins nap.  Then I cut back her A by 20mins and got a 30mins nap but I was able to resettle her and extend it for another 1hr.  Today I pushed her first A time 10mins and got a 35mins nap and she wouldn't resettle. She woke happy and chatty.   I think I am going to push another 15mins tomorrow AM and see what happens.  Almost all these naps she is happy when she wakes.  The 30mins WU she is slightly grizzly but I can usually persuade her to go back to sleep.

Glad to hear I'm not alone on the short naps Liz.  So annoying!  I've given up expectign anythign longer than 40mins. Instead when a long nap does happen I have such a nice surprise! So up until this week she was doing 1hr40 A time and getting a decent AM nap.  A few days ago it started getting short again so I pushed her A to 1hr50 today but still no long naps.  I will go for 2hr A tomorrow AM.  I think at this stage we just have to go for it and consistently get onto 3 naps.  It seems C likes a long A before BT so squeezing in a 4th CN is causing BT troubles.  IF I could just get these naps to extend, we could get there.

I wish I could do an operation 'fix Caia'.. where would I even begin?  ::)

I tried for a 2hr A time before AM nap and she finally fell asleep at 2hr10. Woke up at 35mins slightly grizzly but definitely not going to settle. When I took her out of swaddle she started cooing at me.  WWYD? Push another 10mins tomorrow AM? She did a 2hr30 A before BT last nifht and it was one of her better nights.  Could her A jump this much?
