10 month old resisting afternoon naps
« on: April 30, 2015, 19:34:13 pm »
My just turned 10 month old is struggling with his second nap.  He was doing well with about 2hrs50 first A time and 3-3.5hrs second A time.  But the last few days the afternoon nap has been a nightmare.  Screaming and crying as soon as I leave the room.  I can't tell if he is over or under tired as he seems ready for a nap but not too tired.  One day I took him out of the room and tried again a bit later...and got half an hour nap.  The second day my hubby settled him in the crib...it took 20 minutes.

He has been able to nap and go to sleep by himself from about 4 months.

Example EASY
Wake up 640
Nap 930-1045
Nap attempt at 200- tried settling and leaving to complain but he was clearly standing and screaming.  Took him out ....he was happy...then tried again at 230... Took some settling but he slept 245-315.  Waking upset...but quickly calmed
Bed at 7- normally chats to himself and goes down...this time he needed a lot of help and finally went down at 730

Wake up at 655
Nap 940-1055
Nap attempt at 215...no signs of tiredness or whining before this.  He needed help going down...he immediately stood and screamed....settled in the crib.  Slept 240-345

What is going wrong with our timing?

I think it would help to push both A times out. The first nap is a bit too early, IMO and is just a little over an hour. Pushing out that A might lead to a longer nap. WRT the pm nap, since are saying he seems wide awake and especially since he SS when you PD at a later time, I feel he is saying he is ready for more A. It makes sense that he resisted BT after that since he was probably terribly tired:)
Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!
What do you think?

He is definitely ready for a nap at under 3hrs in the morning, he goes down quick.  But I have wondered if he could hold out for longer.  He does better at night and less likely to have early waking if he has two naps totally not more than 2hrs 45.  So we do like the morning nap to be around an hour 15.

If we have longer awake times I fear that the last nap will be pushed so late that bedtime would need to shift.  But I guess we could cap that nap to make sure he is awake by 4.

Well, hun, if you don't want to push that nap later, then another solution would be to cap that nap at 30 minutes so that he is tired enough for the pm nap

We have a rotten pm napper here too:p DD will take lovely morning naps but pm has always been a struggle. We would do a 1.5-2 hour morning nap and then cap the pm nap to leave a nice gap to bed.
