How long does your 3yr old sleep at night?
« on: May 09, 2015, 00:32:08 am »
Hi,
Just wondering how long everyone else's 3yr olds sleep at night?

Our daughter has been waking at 4.30am lately!
She naps at midday for about 1hr
6.30 bedtime

Is 10hrs a reasonable night sleep? I think I need to move bedtime a bit later.

Also wondering if anyone's had success with shortening the nap to increase night sleep? She will happily occupy herself at 4.30 until we get up at about 6.30 but is of course very tired and grumpy by mid morning.
Ps. I've tried Gro-clocks, reward charts etc to sleep in longer but it hasn't worked 😔

I would definitely push BT back.  My DS averages about 10hrs at night with a 1.5hr nap.  We have him in bed for 8pm but it's usually about 8:30/45 before he falls asleep and he's up around 6:30/7.

On NND he's in bed for 6:30/7 and he'll do a longer night, about 11hrs or so.

We average 11 hours night sleep sometimes 11.5, DS rarely naps now and if he does it's only 20 mins or he's up till 9pm. Wu 6.15 BT 7.15 x

10.5hrs without a nap, occasionally slightly longer. 6:00ish wake up (but with gro clock will stay in his room until 7 playing) 7:30ish bed time. If he has even a 10min sleep in the car we are up until gone 9. You could try capping her nap at 30/45mins to see what effect this has on night sleep?

At 3 mine was no longer napping, he did (and still does) a 12hr night.
Before dropping the nap (2.5) he did a steady 2hr nap and 10hr night.  We had a few months transition where he could not shorten or skip the nap but nights went silly short, down to 9hrs.

Lots of people do shorten the nap and the night increases as a result, for some though (like mine) they need the sleep spread across day and night to stay fully rested and once they can manage it they drop the nap cold turkey.

The thing with the gro-clock, if you use it correctly and consistently it really can help to increase the night sleep if they need more sleep (ie waking too early and then tired and grumpy in the day) but it can take a lot of effort to make the gro-clock work and the routine needs to be suitable - it won't just make a LO sleep if they are not tired.

I would shift the whole day so nap comes later, later BT and later WU.

I would be happy to move her whole day an hour later gradually, so she naps at 12.30/1.00 and bed at 7.30. The only issue is she goes to daycare 3 days/week and they always have nap time at 12.00. Do you think having a slightly earlier nap 3 times a week would matter?

Is this the beginning of the end of her nap?

Yep my dd was always hsn but dropped her nap around 3 and has done an 11-12 hour night since. She occasionally has a 40 minute sofa nap but not often.

It sounds like it's the beginning of the end of the nap to me, yes.  with day care doing a set nap though I'd perhaps try a no nap day once per week (with EBT) and leave the nap at 12.  Some like one NND per week, then 2 etc.

We too dropped the nap well before 3, it had properly gone by 2.5 years. At 3 she was sleeping 11 hours ish at night with no nap, and is still doing much the same at 3.5

Similar story here. What I'd suggest is that you gather enough info to be reasonably confident about how much sleep she needs in 24hrs and then go from there. The nap is likely to be going soon though, I'd say!

Probably about 11-11.5h at 3y4m, no nap. Similar over last year since dropping nap at 29m. Maybe slightly less but not by much x

My hsn ds1 was sleeping 13.5hrs overnight but with no nap at 3yo. We did do a 30 min nap for 3 months before totally dropping it at 2.5yo. After 2yo he only ever slept 12hrs total until we dropped the nap completely and then he slept much better.  Even at 5.5yo he sleeps 12hrs.

My DS 2 who is 3.5yo sleeps 12hrs usually but sometimes only 11hrs if he goes to bed late as he rarely sleeps in in the mornings. He dropped the nap a mongh before his 3rd birthday and had been doing a mix of 1.5hrs nap and no nap days. He never did more than 12hrs total. I always considered him LSN.

They 're 20 months apart but have similar sleep needs. If anything DS2 is the one to wake DS1 in the morning. So i guess it works out well.
