how often should he be nursing?
« on: May 17, 2015, 14:05:17 pm »
Ds is on a 4 hr nursing schedule in tip of 3 solid meals a day. I'm beginning to think he just wants to nurse bc he enjoys it, not needs it. He would literally latch on all day if I let him...He's the definition of a t!tty baby lol. We are trying to wean off of night feeds/sleep train as well.

I think this is a subjective issue but we have been nursing thrice a day for a while now with 3 solid meals -- I don't do snacks as of now. No NFS. We nurse on WU in the morning and from her nap and at BT.

Ok that seems right...he might do 4 feeds but sometimes 3 depending on his wake up.

The official guidance is "as often as he wants to day and night"

Mine were on 4 BFs a day by this age plus 3 solid meals. Ds1 dropped to 3 BFs quite soon after he hit 12-13mo. Ds1 was older, maybe 20mo when we dropped to three. We dropped the rest one feed at a time and we were all done at 26mo for both.

Going by his adjusted age I'd say at least 4 times to get all the nutrients he needs. You're looking to get about 20oz in so it's unlikely he would get that from any less. Remember milk is his main source of nutrition until 12mo. If he didn't want it that is different but if he is happy with 4 feeds I would stick with them until at least a year.

If I understood he is still having night feeds?
So I agree that 4 would be a minimum - the question is how many additional feeds you have per night.

Yeah I guess ive realy been doing more on demand feeding. His night feeds are more for comfort and honestly don't think hes getting much from those. Ali 4 feeds is the norm so that's good to hear that we are on track. DD was definitely more of a take charge baby and let us know when she was ready to do things ie drop a bottle but with him I have a feeling we are going to have to tell him when its time bc I think otherwise he would be on 4 feeds and nightfeeds well past his second year lol.

I'd definitely wean the night feeds before dropping any daytime feeds.
