14mo waking up hungry
« on: May 28, 2015, 11:40:10 am »
Hello my 14mo has always had a very good, varied big appetite.
She has started waking early e.g. 0550 and today 0530 hungry..
I'm wondering if I should give her more food.
Any ideas on amount of food a 14mo should be eating and what would you give as a supper to help keep full over night (I know food intake depends on the child but just an idea would be good)..at her 1 year weigh in she was on 98th percentile for height and 91st for weight..
Her last bottle of milk before bed is full fat milk..what's the average volume given?
Thanks :-)

Mine didn't have any milk before bed at that age as we dropped the BT bottle at 12 months, instead he had a small sippy cup of milk (so not much) and a solids supper, so I can't really say about volume of milk.  I used to give things like toast, crumpet, fruit pancakes, carbsy stuff mainly.

Otherwise I'd just feed her until she's full at each meal, amounts really do vary a lot.
The morning hunger could be a growth spurt. Mine is very hungry when he has a GS, where as he will usually have a cup of milk about 30 min after waking and breakfast 30-60 min later, during a growth spurt he will ask for food earlier than this, either as soon as he wakes or when I give his milk he'll ask for a banana (in addition to the milk and will still eat breakfast). His other meals tend to be bigger and snacks are bigger too, or even an extra snack or two through the day.  It usually only lasts a few days or a week before eating returns to normal.

You could also make sure she has enough protein in the day which will help to satisfy her appetite.

I was wondering if she is experiencing a growth spurt as for the last few days she has been eating a lot and asking for food for what seems like all the time!
When you say you gave a solids supper, do you mean after your child's evening meal? what time did you give evening meal and supper and what time bed? My dd is having milk from a sip cup in the morning and a little before her nap and then the bottle before bed (daddy says he likes giving the bottle even though I don't want her to have it any more)  :-X

I often say kids having a GS will eat until the fridge is empty! I do remember many times being in absolute shock at the amount I've seen DS eat (and he is not a big boy) and he appears to be asking for food all day long.

When you say you gave a solids supper, do you mean after your child's evening meal?
Yes.  I introduced the supper when we dropped the BT milk. I offered the sippy of milk and a snack before our BT routine began and then offered a smaller bottle and weaned the bottle over about a week continuing with the 'supper' and allowing the morning milk to increase if wanted.  Dinner and supper times changed with changing nap routines and BT but something like
dinner 4.30 (a full evening meal)
supper 5.30/5.45 (cup of milk, he only really took a little, with a solids snack)
BT routine began 6.00
Sleep 7.00

Basically giving the supper about a 1hr to 1.5hr before sleep.
In fact I think we had EBT as an every night thing at the beginning of this as he had just dropped to one nap so it will have been more like supper at 5.00 with BT routine beginning at 5.30 for a 6.30 sleep until his BT moved later again. I can also remember times when dinner ran straight into supper, he ate a full dinner and then a full supper, it's just how times worked out sometimes say if dinner was a bit late and he needed EBT too.

Although the guidance is to drop bottles at 12 months the important aspect is that toddlers don't have a bottle all day long, a quickly drank bottle at BT is not going to harm development. You do need to be brushing teeth after the bottle though as milk on teeth all night is not good.
I'd say if Daddy enjoys that closeness and time with her, there is no real need to drop the bottle right away.  On the other hand she won't be taking a bottle for ever so maybe they can begin another bonding activity together which could be equally as enjoyable for both? Toddlers and children, both boys and girls, enjoy wrestling and rolling around on the floor testing their strength, dads often enjoy this role. Another lovely activity is a story book together snuggled up on the sofa or in bed.

TBH I probably wouldn't do a supper AND a big BT milk, it feels like a bit of an imbalance in taking in so many calories at the end of the day - although if it works for you there is no reason why not.  I'd probably look at increasing calories in the earlier part of the day, maybe eggs for breakfast which would give an extra portion of protein.
