Night time
« on: June 03, 2015, 21:19:04 pm »
I think we need help.....

I havent been around for a while, getting ready for the new arrival. But the other little nugget who is 19 months now is throwing some curveballs with his sleep. We had the 18 month regression where he messed about at Bt but got over that after 3-4 weeks and now he falls asleep like an angel for his nap and bt. The problem we have is that he wakes 25 min sometimes 30/50 mims after BT,  and i just cant figure out why!!!!
We do set nap at 12.30 and bt 7.45-8
He wakes and he is inconsolable for some time, he jusy wants to ho to sleep but he cant seem to. The other night after i calmed him he just stayed awake for an hour just lying there quetly. Its been going on for a couple of weeks, calpol doesnt help 😭

Hi Viktoria! What time does he wake in the morning and how long is the nap? Kind of seems undertired if he lays there quietly?

His wu time is always different. Originally we aimed at 7wu 12.30-2.30 nap and then 7.45-8 bt.
Most of the time ge wakes at 6.30/40.
I have tried waking him at 2, but it makes no difference and he doesnt do well when woken up, it takes him a good hour to return to normal self, he just whines and doesnt want to do anything.

Yesterday he fell asleep immediately at 7.45pm, woke at, 8,05 crying, resettled him, he woke again at 9.30, same thing and then around midnight and daddy brought him to our bed, as we both have work today and need to get some sleep. os woke at 7.20 this morning, which is unusual for him.

Its confusing because he falls asleep so well in his cot on his own within seconds :(

Weird question but do you know if he actually is totally asleep at 8 or could he be quietly laying there? When did he go to one nap and has it been a 2 ish hour nap for quite some time? Sorry for more questions! Teething at all?

Oh he is out totally, snoring away, i go back 5 mins later to check, he is teething, i giess im stumped because for lunchtime nap i dont give him any calpol and he sleeps no problem.
I will try ibuprofen tonight, thays better for teeth right?
Its not always a 2 hour nap, sometime its only 1.20 or 1.40, we go with what we get, as BT hasbt been a problem before, so shorter or longer nap wasnt a big deal really.

Yesterday bt8pm, lots of wakings early on and up at 6.30 this morning.

That's a good point - he maybe not asleep and just start messing after 20min. I would consider also OT as his A till BT is long - maybe the nap should be later and longer A in the morning? Usually nap is at 12/12:30 with a 7pm BT and later BT is usually together with a later nap.
Second idea as Heidi suggested - maybe it's time to cap the nap, but frankly speaking it would mean a really low sleep needs as go to bed 8/8:30 (if we say he is not asleep) and gets up 6:30 most of times it's 10h night and 1:30 nap which gives max of 12h. I would say that it's low but maybe he always was very lsn.

Last idea - any AP involved? You wrote that you took him to bed finally, does that happen often?

I would say there is no AP, yes he come to our bed in the morning, but before this started he would happily sleep in his bed until morning.
He is asleep, as i go in and check, he wakes crying, but all he wants to do is go to sleep, he doesnt even want to come out of his cot for a cuddle, he kust pushes me away and wamts to go back into his cot and go to sleep.
We have done set naps and Bt for a while now. The only reason we moved Bt to later was because of 18 month regression, as he would mess around at BT and not go to sleep until 8 anyway.

So would u suggest 12.30nap and then 7.30 BT?

I would try earlier bt - you will see what you get quite quickly. Or you may think of pushing nap a bit if you think that 8pm BT suits you all well. I would try to keep day up to 13h max and cap the nap if needed if you ask me. If shortening his afternoon A will not help rather than make things worse you have your answer that he needs rather less sleep and probably shorter nap.

If he woke at 7regularly i wouldnt mind pushing the nap, but with the 6.30 wu most mornings, he is so ready for a nap at 12.30, he is still asleep, he doesnt cope well with being woken up, so i will let him sleep and see if we can do earlier Bt tonight, he would be pk going to sleep at 7.30 i reckon, which is our preference in terms of BT anyway.

Same nonsense last night, but for some reason was messing about until 8pm anyway and woke 20 mins later screaming. Woke at 6.40 this morning. So will do a 12.30 nap anyway and will tru for a 7.30BT. Have given him nurofen before bed yesterday, made no difference. Is it just a phase?
What are the avergare sleep time in 24 hours for 19month old nuggets?

Typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep

This is typical amounts but in saying that DD3 is 21.5 months and her sleep amount in 24 h is more like the 4 year old amount on that page! DD2 at that age was getting 14-15 hours in 24 at that age.

So 13-13.5 is optimal, well today was 6.40wu, 12.30-2.20nap and 8pmBT. And nowakings so far, still asleep. I did nurofen him up 30 mins before Bt, so not sure if that helped.

Hopefully wont have an early waking tomorrow morning and this has just been a phase of some sort.

Second LO is due mid july, i really wouldnt want to deal with 2 kids waking all night long :)

Yeah that is no fun (I speak from experience, DD1 & DD2 used to tag team when they were small to make sure I was up all hours of the night!). Optimal is different for every child - some might do fine with less, others need loads more sleep!

Up at 1.30am and 6.10 for the day, that is just way too early for a sunday.

How best to shift the day to at least 6.30, better 7. Does that mean shifting his nap?
