Oat allergy
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:24:04 am »
DS has been on solid foods and loving it but I have discovered that his is sensitive to oats. Both times I have offered them he has broken out in red spots on his chest and back. Since he is still bfing should I stop eating oats as well now that I know they bother him?

I would because it could be damaging his intestinal tract inside without you seeing it.

I assume they didn't come into contact with all the areas affected so it doesn't sound like a just contact allergy/irritation to the skin.

Thanks. I will cut out oats as I definitely don't want to hurt his little insides!

He doesn't seem to have any contact allergy reactions to oats. I often use Aveeno baby lotion on him and it's not a problem.

Hi - LOs can be allergic to anything but oats isn't one that I have come across TBH. Are you sure that it can't be something else? I assume he is OK with gluten as that is normally the issue with oats.

Not 100% that it isn't something oats but fairly certain. I hadn't heard of it either until I taught a girl this year with an oat allergy. He hasn't had any other foods with gluten so that could be it. I will keep a close eye when introduce wheat.

If you haven't tried gluten yet then I would keep a very close eye and maybe introduce a tiny bit at first. I would have thought an oat allergy very rare. xx
