7 months 40 min naps
« on: June 23, 2015, 10:02:36 am »
Hello,

I have posted already in the PU/PD forum and got great support. We are weaning our 7.5 months daughter from being rocked to sleep. She has never been an independent sleeper and she is still far from it. It works a lot better for bedtime when my husband brings her to bed. She can then fall asleep in the cot, still with support. However it does not work for the day naps. Therefore I am wondering if it is me, if she is OT or UT  or whatever. After BT she usually wakes up after 2.5hrs and then later on every 2.5-3 hrs. Currently she is a lot more restless and fuzzy during day and night, maybe teething or learning a lot new motor skills.
The day naps are either 40 min or 1.5hr and sometimes a CN. To get a 1.5hr nap I BF in-between or she is the pram. I increased A time to almost 3hrs but it did not change the nap length,  well I started 2 days ago. And it was very hard for her to fall asleep. The best A time for her to fall asleep was often 1.5 hr in the morning, so therefore I am afraid that 3hrs are OT and she cannot settle herself. She rubs her eyes after 2hrs.
Here are the last 2 days:

WU: 7
E: BF 8.30
A: till 9:15, then starting to bring her to sleep
S:9:45 (38 min), BF to continue sleep till 10:50
A: playtime
E: 12:10 solids
A: playtime
S: 13:45 - 14:25(in pram, took 5 min to fall asleep)
E: 15 BF
A:
S: CN: 17:15 - 17:40 (in sling)
E: 18:10 solids
A: 19:bath, BF
S: starting at 20, asleep 20:20 in cot
WU: 22:45

WU: 6:35 (I had to wake her)
E: BF 8
A:
S: 9:38 (started at 9.15)
WU: 10:18
A:
E: 11:30 solids
A:
S: 13- 14 in pram
E: 14:30
A:
S: CN: 16:45- 17:15 in sling
A:
E: 18:15
BT:20:00

Are there any suggestions if I should change A time etc?
Love to hear from you,
Bela

40 mins almost always means UT, not OT. I would try increasing her A time. By this age, most have dropped the catnap, and A time is at least 3-3.5hrs
Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!

Thanks Anna,
why does she still falls asleep before 3hr A time and gets fuzzy even though she is UT according to the nap time? I feel like sleep is a big science and i cannot follow my gut feeling. It is hard for me to find the right time to put her down to sleep, since she gets restless but still smiles etc, she rubs her eyes early and later too. Shall I follow the clock?

Babies get used to having a nap at a certain time, so it can be habitual. Also at this age, sleep signs are not so reliable and can mean she's just ready for a change of activity, for example. I would try following the clock for a few days and see what happens to naps.

I already asked this question but to make it clear again: awake time means from eyes open to sleep? Does this include the time until babies flu asleep? When I head for a 3hr A time, shall I start bringing to sleep around 2.45 or 2.50 or start at 3hr. Sounds a bit picayunish, but it might make a difference in time.  :-\
Thanks

Yes, bedtime/wind down routine is still A time. Everything from when she opens her eyes until she is fully asleep.

Thanks,
I tried to keep her wake this morning as close as possible to 3hrs but she yawned and got very fuzzy at 2.3hr. I had her in the sling before that to calm her down. So I put her down at 2.3hr, she screamed like hell, picked her up and she got very drowsy immediately. I put her down, a short scream and two pats and she was asleep at 2.40hrs awake time BUT woke up after 30 min. I then APOP (BF) her so she slept another 40 min.
Is she too tired to be put down, shall I start earlier or shall I go on even longer? Was she OT because she fell asleep so early.
Bela

Again, don't jump to 3hrs straight away it will be too much. So you add 10-15 mins to your current A time, and stick with that for a few days, then add another 10-15 mins, and keep on like that until your naps get better ;)

I think i pushed too fast and caused the short naps. Today am nap was 1hr (waking after 40min, short bouncing and continued patting ) after A time of 2.45hr. Well I started at 2.20hr but she could not settle herself, I was for a walk with the sling to calm her and make her tired before putting her down for the nap. She already yawned and rubbed her eyes. But as soon as I put her down she got nervous and cried. PU and calmed her on my arm, PD crying. PU calming and almost asleep. THe pm nap in the pram (which was always reliable to be at least 1hr, but had gotten short the last time) was 1.5hr  ::), including some waking but she could settle herself. So no CN, and BT after almost 3hr and it took very long.
I will increase A time the day after tomorrow by another 10 min -is this o.k? I know that the A-time is still a bit low and I find it difficult to figure out when to put her down before the 3hr A time, in order to not have her UT  and she doe not want to sleep. It is very tricky.

It sounds like she's doing good. Hang in there, I know this is hard.
