11 month old early waking
« on: June 29, 2015, 10:58:57 am »
Hi All

My 11 month old has been waking at anywhere from 4.45 to 5.30 every morning for over a month now and we are exhausted!  I have 2 other children who keep getting woken up by him at that time in the morning too and it's really starting to affect our household!

We all go to bed early to compensate but it's still so hard and I  don't know what to do now!

His normal routine goes:

5.00 wake up and cry until someone goes into him.  If you try and settle him and walk out he goes berserk and then most of the street know about it!

6.30 milk (6oz)  We do make him wait for his milk so it doesn't become a habit of having it so early
7.30 breakfast - cereal and toast
9.00 nap
11.30 lunch and fruit
1.30 nap
3.00 snack
5.00 dinner and yogurt
6.00 bath
6.30/7.00 milk (6oz) and bed

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks

B x

How long is he napping for? I'd think you need to start capping one of those naps as part of the 2-1 transition, and pushing his morning nap later - 10am at the earliest really :/
what do you think?
Is his room totally dark? It is light so early in the morning these days.

Well, it depends really.  He falls asleep normally on the school run!  I would say it is generally an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon.

I wondered when they from two naps to one...... is it normally around now?

Well it's a process of gradually reducing one nap - which usually starts now and ends up with one nap at around 13-15 months.

This just doesn't seem to be working and is really making life miserable for all of us.  The day starts at 5am with DS crying and crying until we go into him and bring him upstairs so he doesn't wake my other two up.  Then he cries and cries and wants to play until we give him his milk which we make him wait for until 6.15/6.30.  It's so difficult to then keep him awake until 9.30 when we're on the school run at 8.20 and he's on his last legs. We have managed it though. He sleeps for no longer than an hour and then the day is as normal but with him crying every time I am out of sight, even for a couple of seconds!  He is tired all day and he is more than ready for another sleep at 1.00.  Again for an hour. Bed is at 6.30, he probably nods off at 7.00 though.
I don't know how to make this better and we're all suffering, it's the worst way to start the day.  I can't see how I am going to be able to push that morning sleep any further either.
We're going on holiday in 3 weeks and so far we're all dreading it 😢.
Please help

Have you tried an earlier bedtime? It sounds like he's overtired to be honest. I will see if we can get anyone else to take a peek at this for more ideas. If you treated 5am like a night waking and just fed him in the dark do you think he would nod off back to sleep?

If I put him to bed too early he stays awake in his cot anyway! We've tried feeding him but although he stops crying he thinks it's time to start the day!  I've kept him awake this morning in the supermarket until 9.50.  He has instantly conked out in the car!  Now I'll have stay in the car for an hour!!!

Do you feed in the dark and put him back in his cot without a nappy change etc? He wouldn't drift back to sleep? At that age I was doing a 3/4am feed with my little girl which was the only way she would sleep til 6-7.

He's been sleeping through until 6.30 previously so I know he can do it and doesn't need that extra milk to get him through, plus I dont want to re-introduce it!

What time do you think I ought to put him to bed?

I know what you mean, but if that's what it took to get him into the habit of sleeping later, then you could drop it again later? I wasn't thrilled either, but is rather do an early hours feed than get up at 5am!

At 11 months is go for no more than a 13 hour day with one long and one short nap.

It's worth a try. It seems like he is overtired. If he goes to bed at 6 and wakes at 5, that's an 11 hour night which will leave him better rested through the day so could do one short and one long nap. I have to say it never particularly worked with my son, but did with my daughter. Some kids don't tack on night sleep, some do. But it does seem like he is OT from what you describe - do you think so?

I have no idea any more!!!  He had about an hour and half sleep earlier and I woke him up.  He is very happy now and playing lots.  We'll have some lunch and a play then I'll let him have a nap later.  How long would you recommend for the afternoon nap now he has had 1 1/2 hours this morning?  1/2 hour?

Personally I would do a shorter nap (30-45mins) so you are more likely to get him down for an early night.
