2-1 approaching
« on: June 29, 2015, 14:29:45 pm »
Hi,

So ds is slowly approaching the 2-1 transition. He is still taking two naps but the second is now being capped shorter and shorter. I also cap his first nap to 1.5 hours to ensure the second nap doesn't need to be too short just yet. My question is: at what point do I stop capping the first nap and let him sleep as long as he wants? Once he starts refusing the second nap? Once we are close to 5 hours a time? I am worried that he will get used to just 1.5 hours if I cap it for too long and then extending it when on one nap will be tough.

I would carry on as you are until you hit nap refusals in the afternoon, then you have the choice of cutting the first nap shorter to fit in a second, or just pushing out the first A time and letting LO sleep, and making good use of EBT.  My general advice would be don't change things until you need to x

Thank you :). We have hit an ew mess now :(. And because of that I think ot is creeping in. Trying to figure out what to do. He is very hard to get down for a nap on less than normal a time so fitting two uncapped naps in is hard. I sense this transition is going to be even messier than the last!

You don't really want two uncapped naps at this stage.....what is the day looking like?

Current easy is:

Get him up at 6 (although he has recently been waking up between 5 and 530 and messes about in his cot)
E 630 (milk)
E 8 (breakfast)
A 6-930
S 930-11
E 11 (milk)
E 1230 (lunch)
E 2 (milk)
A 11-230
S 230-330
E 4 (dinner)
E 630 (milk)
A 330-645
Bt 645 (takes 10-15 mins to fall asleep)

We are approaching the end of a wonder week so I am sure his a times are about to jump again. Not sure what to do then as if I cut the second nap further he will be getting less than 2.5 hours day sleep which doesn't seem enough?

Oh my I would have thrown a street party if either of mine had ever got near 2.5h day sleep!  Less is perfectly fine, but until you drop to one nap you want to keep one nap of 1.5-2h plus a catnap so could be as little as around 2h (1h30 plus 20-30 mins CN).

Looking at your EASY I would say you need to make a decision about whether to keep a long am or long pm nap.  If you want to stick with long am, then you need to start pushing that nap later (regardless of WU) as a long nap at 9.30am will reinforce early waking.  If you like the 9.30am nap that's ok, but you'll need to start capping that shorter until it becomes a catnap so LO can't make up night sleep x

My plan was to do long am short pm. I have been slowly pushing the first nap back and then cutting the second nap back shorter but this has been very slowly as I am worried that he is still only 8 months. I have only been pushing 5/10 mins when he either starts short napping or messing around at the start of the nap.

Ah ok, sorry hun I hadn't appreciated he was that young.  Not that 2-1 is impossible at this age, a few do switch to one nap very early but I think I would be trying to hold onto those two naps a while longer.

What is his mood like in the day?  With that 10-10.5h night do you think he could actually be OT?  His day is very long right now....

Ot is definitely possible.... Although he has never done much longer at night. I was thinking of letting him sleep for slightly longer in his am nap today in order to try and let him catch up if ot was the culprit but he actually slept until 6 this morning and seemed well rested so I carried on as normal. I am trying to wean his last nf at the moment so I guess that may be messing with things.

Thanks for checking in.

We now have teething in the mix so it's difficult to tell if there is a routine issue. I gave him a slightly longer second nap yesterday and a shorter a time to bed and we had a good night so there must have been some ot there. I am planning to do the same today so we will see where that gets us. A bit of a backwards step as the second nap should be getting shorter rather than longer but he obviously needs to catch up a bit first.

Sleep needs can go up and down all the time, a 10 month old who looks close to one nap may suddenly need much more daytime sleep if they start walking and keep two naps for another few months so it's not a one-way street :)
