Fixed WU times and early wakings help please
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:38:57 am »
how do you do a fixed wake up time please?  My LO wakes up around 5/5:30am and I'm certainly not getting him up then!  Sometimes he'll drop off for a bit, or if I feed him he'll do another 45 minutes-1 hour sleep but he doesn't always want a feed if I've fed him in the night.  I do a fixed bedtime (within half an hour or so depending on how long it takes him to fall asleep) and I could do a fixed getting up time - but this isn't the same as wake up time is it?  Which one would I calculate the awake time from?  Thanks

Awake time starts when LO wakes.  However some people find that quiet awake time in the cot doesn't quite 'count' as full awake time as LO isn't so stimulated.  Basically I would start by assuming wake up time is the start of A time but then if you find you get shorter naps that seem UT on days where LO has spent more quiet time in the cot you can adjust accordingly e.g treat time awake in the cot as half awake time so 20 mins in cot is 10 mins awake time.

Treat all wakings prior to your desired WU time as NWs, and wake LO within a reasonable window of time say 30 mins or so if they don't wake naturally x

Thanks.  I guess the only problem now is when i wake up and DS is already awake!  He can easily play around quietly for half an hour or so...I guess I just have to go by tired signs.

I used to ignore any awake time I wasn't aware of ;)

I'm with Katherine ;)

What age is he hun? It's really normal for babies under 6 mos to wake around 5am, often for a feed, sometimes they stir and will go back to sleep.  If he needs a feed, he'll let you know. But if he doesn't seem bothered, I'd leave him to it and let him drop off again - don't want him to get into the habit of 'getting up' at 5am!

He's nearly 15 weeks.
Today he fed at 3:30am, back down at 4am and woke me up by thumping around at about 5:30am!  But eyes were shut and so I left him to it.  Next thing I knew, it was 6:30am and he was definitely awake!  So started the day then.

There you go, sounds greatl!

Just don't fall into the trap of letting him think 5.30 is day. :P
