11 month with short naps
« on: July 05, 2015, 18:40:33 pm »
Hi,
For the past few months my 11 month old little man has slept a reliable 12 hours overnight. We've never really hit the magic 1.5 hr naps consistently but until recently naps were usually 1-1.25h twice a day (sometimes up to 2hrs but fairly rare).
Over the past couple of weeks he has been regularly waking from his naps at 30 mins (always his danger time). Occasionally, if I get the lullabies on quickly he will go back to sleep for exactly another 30 mins. If he doesn't wake at 30 mins he will always wake bang on 1 hour. He seems to be consistently doing a total of 1.5 hrs of daytime sleep (nursery put him down for 3 naps on his first full day and he did three 30 mins sleep but it is usually split between 30 mins morning and 1 hour afternoon or vice versa).
He's just started nursery but the shorter naps precede this. He's now walking and very active and he usually seems very upset when he wakes after 30 mins and is tired during his awake period and is always very tired at bedtime. I leave him for 5 minutes to see if he will resettle but usually gets more upset.
I'm reluctant to try w2s as he stirs easily if you go in and I suspect it will just wake him up. I had started cutting back on his first awake time as he seems so tired by about 3 hours after he gets up but this hasn't helped. I was thinking I probably need to push his awake periods gradually to try to get at least one longer nap (and a cat nap if he can't make it to bedtime). I'm worried about making him OT though.
What do you think?

An average day for us is:
W- 6am
S - 10-10.30/11 (4 hours awake time)
S - 2/3 - 3/3.30 (3.5/4 hours awake time) depending on length of first nap)
BT - 6/6.30

That's definitely not enough at his age, IMO, especially since he doesn't seem to be LSN and seems tired after the short naps. 4 hours A time isn't exactly short though - not short enough for such a tiny nap at least. FWIW, at 11 months, our A times were 5 hours and we had already moved to a 1 nap routine. I definitely agree that a routine tweak is needed - is there any nap that you can resettle? What methods do you use to RS him?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I agree that it's not enough for him.

He is really hard to resettle unless he does it on his own. He wakes up crying from every nap (even after 2 hours) so we usually put the baby monitor music on and leave him for 5 minutes to see if he is going to go back to sleep or work himself up. If we go in he instantly stands up and it's really hard to get him to lie down again. If we do get him down and stroke his back he'll lie still with his eyes open for a really long time but doesn't go back to sleep.

Do you think I should keep pushing the activity times? Or any other tips? Any help gratefully received.
Thanks x

I hear you on the standing. DD is the same. She goes from zero to standing in a second, and won't settle back down in her crib. DH ends up holding her for a bit, when her head goes down on his shoulder, he PDs again.
