Yawning 3.75yr old.....
« on: July 08, 2015, 22:55:59 pm »
Hi all,

This might be a little bit of a strange question but I was talking with a friend and just wondered what others experiences and thoughts were!

My 3.75yr old (4 in October) dropped his nap completely in about January - I don't think we've had a single one since, not even in the car. Anyway, my question is due to my concerns about whether or not he's getting enough sleep. BT is set at 7.45pm and he is usually asleep around 8pm or 8.15pm latest. There's no signs of him being OT late afternoon or evening to speak of, for the most part BT routine is smooth and he just lies and chats before he goes to sleep. He does anywhere from 10.5 - 11.5hrs ons on average I guess, with a rare 12hr night once in a while. So he wakes from say 6.45-8am. I generally don't wake him. But he yawns throughout the day - so is this an indication he's not getting enough sleep? I mean, it isn't what I'd call excessive yawning but usually anytime we are in the car he will yawn a couple of times, sometimes mid-morning, he will sit down and stare off into space and give a yawn. Sometimes mid-afternoon. Is this 'normal' so to speak? Or do you think I should do something to see if he needs more sleep?

I guess I yawn when I sit down sometimes or in the car due to that movement and the road noise... But I'm a tired mother!! Haha...

Gee I though when he'd dropped his nap I could let go of worrying about his sleep!!! 😟

Hi, I was wondering the same thing about DS because he'd yawn and say he was tired but he was getting plenty of sleep - he in fact had fluid in his ear and was trying to equalise the pressure by yawning then saying he was tired because he associated yawning with being tired... then he started sticking his fingers in his ears and said it stopped him being tired :P

Anyway, point is, I think if he's waking on his own and behaviour is fine, its probably sufficient for him. The yawning can be boredom, prospect of boredom, fluid in ears (not necessarily infection), copying your mannerisms...

Wow, that's an interesting point! I would never have thought of that! Thank you for your comments, certainly worth thinking about. :-)
