How long to wait till feeding a hungry baby at night?
« on: July 24, 2015, 02:02:56 am »
Hi ladies,
My lo wakes up for a night feed at around 530am every night. I think it's truly hunger as he's ravenous. Question is how long do I let him grunt and fuss before breastfeeding him? Should I feed him at the first grunt or let him get hungrier to the point of crying before feeding him?

I'm confused. will feeding him at first grunt encourage him to wake up more at night ( since food comes easy at night)? Yet at the same time, I'm concerned that waiting till he cries will disrupt his sleep.

Really appreciate your advice. :)

Once he wakes up and asks for it, I would feed him immediately, hun, so that you could both get some more sleep. Well, not at first grunt per se, let him wake up and ask for it - sometimes they do wake a bit, make a few noises, roll over and go back to sleep -- so S.L.O.W down (Stop, Listen, Observe, figure out What's up), wait a bit before responding - don't watch the clock or anything, just pause yk and see whether he is truly waking

Thks! How long should I wait? My lo doesn't have much of a temper ( so far:)) he starts grunting for an hour before it escalates into cries. So often, I'm lying there, awake wondering when to go in and feed in. Often I wait for 45 mins before feeding him.

Even if he is grunting, is he awake? He might just be in light sleep. DD used to make all sorts of noises at that time. I'm not saying don't feed, I'm just saying observe the situation before you decide

Gosh, I never ever check if he's awake. The room is so dark that I can't see him clearly. I just pick him up n pop him to the breast. If baby's eyes are closed but he is grunting, does it mean he is still asleep?

Yep! My DS did those funny noises when he was little - we called it 'fighting pirates' for some reason.
