Help getting started
« on: July 31, 2015, 13:52:09 pm »
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, wasn't sure where it should go. We've read over lots of material on the site and got the book from the library but we are still not sure how and when to start the easy routine to get our newborn sleeping.

She is 3 weeks old today. So far we have just focused on keeping her awake for an activity time after eating during the day and knowing the difference between night and day. We are feeding her primarily pumped milk with 2-3 formula bottles per day to supplement. Feeding on demand and this time.  She eats about 10-11 times per day currently. She typically eats every 2-3 hours during the day and then wants food every 1-1.5 hours between 5-8 pm.  After that she will usually go 3-4 hours between feedings until morning. So when/how do we start getting her on a routine. When/How do we implement a "bed time". How long should we be shooting for a night.

Thank you!

Sounds like you're doing just fine. The early days are messy but just keep doing what you're doing, and it should be fine. Regarding your BT question, Tracy advises BT between 7 & 8. However, what with the witching hour & purple crying period (and don't forget growth spurts!), I found DD would settle only closer to 8.30. So I went with this. Then as things settled down, I shifted it to 7.

So is 4 weeks too early to start a set bedtime and wake up time?

Too early to hope for consistency at least. Simply separating E and A and incorporating the 4S wind down routine is more than enough, IMO
