Dropping feeds- 5 1/2 month old only feeds from left!
« on: September 06, 2015, 19:56:23 pm »
Hi,
I need a bit of help sorting out my one working boob please! I'm trying to minimize BF now as its getting uncomfortable 😔 My boy started refusing right breast about 6 weeks ago. I noticed when expressing that production was definitely slower and less from this side. Around the same time I started introducing formula for one feed a day , planned  to combi feed until 6m, then move to formula.  Now he is just over 5 1/2 months and I'm struggling to sort the feeds out and have constant engorgement and leaking.  This is how the feeds are usually:

7am BF
8am - small amount fruit purée/baby porridge
11am - 8oz formula
3pm - 7oz formula
7pm - 7oz formula ... Or BF depending  how full it is!
10.30pm - DF - 4-7oz FF or BF ... Opposite of last feed!
3-3.30am - BF

So... Can anyone help?! As lo usually wants a feed at 3am is like to BF then, but can't work out BT and DF- which should be FF?! Confused and lopsided 😏

Hi and welcome to BW :)

If you are trying to wean the BFing completely then I would FF at BT and your supply should settle down if you aren't giving it that demand. The engorgement could be because you have replaced several feeds with formula now and your body just needs to catch up.

How do you feel about pumping? If you are happy to then when you use FF at BT you could always pump just enough to relieve the engorgement until your body gets the message not to keep producing so much. You can always use what you pump in the next bottle and top it up with FF.

Once your supply has settled down from dropping the BT feed you could switch the DF to a bottle too.

Great, thank you, that's super helpful.
The engorgement problem is really just from 8ish, so this should def help. I've tried to be careful with dropping feeds slowly, 2 weekly I think. But now I'm exclusively using one, and he's learnt to bite with his 2 teeth(ouch) I will move to FF over next few weeks if I can.

Thanks for your help x
