3.5 month old night wakings
« on: September 21, 2015, 19:06:23 pm »
DD still has 1-2 NF's.  They used to be around 2AM and then 5-6AM but now the first NF is getting earlier and earlier and for the past 2 nights we have had issues with her going back to sleep after.

For the past week or so she's woken up around midnight, and now for the past 2 nights it's been around 11ish.  BT is 7 and at BT she gets a 3-4 oz bottle in addition to her normal BF (because she tends to be very frustrated with the slow flow at BT so I BF her after the CN and then start bath etc and just before sleep she gets her bottle.

She's not on a predictable routine, she short naps a lot but we usually get one good nap a day (I APOP it if it doesn't happen naturally).

Here is Saturday:

WU 8:00
E 8:15 I offer 2 sides
E 9:30 top up offer 1 side
S 9:50-10:30
E 12:00
S 12:15-3:15
E 3:20 I offer 2 sides
S 5:00-5:30
E 6:15 I offer 2 sides
E 7:15 3-4 oz in a bottle of EBM
S 7:30
E 11:15 - was awake until 12:30
E 3:30

This was yesterday:

WU 7:00
E 7:15 offer both sides
E 8:45 offer one side
S 8:50-9:30
E 9:40 offer both sides
E 11:15 offer one side
S 11:30-12:15, I resettled her and she slept from 12:45 until I had to Wake her at 1:30 (it was her baptism)
E 1:30 offer one side
E 3:00 offer 2 sides
S 3:15-5:15 (APOP in Ergo she was exhausted)
E 5:30 offer both sides
E 7:00 3 oz from bottle
S 7:30
E 11:00 - fed well but then was very agitated and did not go to sleep properly until 2AM
E 5:30
WU 8:00

Is there something wrong with our routine? She gets about 1h50-2h of A time, and she is generally very happy. Why is she waking up earlier and earlier in the night, and being mad about it??

I should add that she is not an IS - she falls asleep on me with a pacifier.

Tonight BT has been really difficult - kind of similar to how it was last night after her 11AM NW.  It's as if she has completely forgotten how to fall asleep? Maybe it is time for some sleep training? I wanted to wait until 4 months to do PUPD since I do not have the patience for shh pat.

Here is today's EASY, wouldappreciate some thoughts on the routine before starting PUPD:

WU 7:55
E 8:30
E 9:30 top up 1 side only
S 9:50-10:30
E 12:00
S 12:30-3:30 (I woke her)
E 3:30
S 6:00-6:15 (I woke her)
E 6:45
E 7:00 2 oz in a bottle
It's been 1h and she's not asleep yet.

It looks like your A time are ok, I wonder if this might be a growth spurt and she's just hungry.  I know Tracy says don't give a bottle right before bed but I did/do with both boys, and they each took/take 4-6oz, easily.  I wonder if you gave her a bit more at BT, and then popped a DF in there around 10ish, she might be able to go longer before waking.  Some people are terrified of the DF because they don't want to wake baby but I started it with DS1 when he was 2 months old and it was super easy.

Ok good point I will try to increase the quantity in her BT feed and re-introduce the DF. We tried it maybe a month ago, but it did not change anything, at the time she was having a NF at 2 and 5 and they both kept on even with the DF so we dropped it.

The major problem I have though is that it seems she does not know how to go back to sleep anymore?? As I said she is not an IS but she used to be easy to get to sleep and then I could just put her down and should would stir but go back to sleep right away. Right now I get her majorly upset when it is time to get to sleep at BT and after NF's. I don't have that problem during the day, she gets to sleep just fine. But now after NF's she can stay up for close to an hour, sometimes more. She looks like she is frustrated because she wants to sleep but can't?

I just had a thought, could this be the 4-month sleep regression? Never experienced it with the other LO's.

We're also in that window where the CN does not fit in well. I Wonder if it is too late maybe? I find I kinda need to squeeze it in, but without it BT would be way too early. Could it be it is affecting her night sleep?

It could be the 4 month regression.  I didn't have it with either boy so I'm not an expert but always a possibility.  I would see how/if the extra milk helps, otherwise you might need to dig into the sleep training a little earlier than expected.
