13 month old ew
« on: October 14, 2015, 19:49:43 pm »
Hi everyone,

13 mo dd has been one one nap for 2 weeks- she sleeps about 1h15-1h30 for it. I thought it would help her EW but she's getting earlier.

The past few days she's woken at 6am. She naps around 12, then up 1:30 :( , then into bed and asleep by 7.

What should I do? I'd really like her to wake for the day closer to 7 and that doesn't seem enough sleep for her age.

Thanks :)

Hi there, sorry you didn't get any replies yet.
I've asked a mod to move you over to the toddler sleep board as your LO is over 1yo now.

Hi hun, how is her mood on the one nap? I agree it's not particularly long, has she tended towards being LSN? What was her routine like on 2 naps? Just wondering if she's completely ready to make the switch or if there's some tweaking to be done to keep her on 2 naps if she's getting OT. My DD2's not quite there yet, but I remember when DD1 was going through the 2-1 she did a mix of 1 and 2 nap days for a while depending on WU, OT, etc

Thanks for your reply :)

She's generally happy but still clearly very tired. By 5pm she's over it, and falls asleep feeding. Then we usually have an EW. I thought that putting her to one nap would help as it would extend her ew time and hopefully her nap would lengthen but it hasn't yet. This weekend I've put her back on two naps. This is a struggle as with school run on weekdays I need her to sleep her afternoon nap in the car- but she's not quite tired enough from first nap. I'm thinking I'll shorten the first nap, then she may be more willing to sleep in the car? And hopefully her overtired ew will change too?

I don't know! With my boys I could just change naps to suit as we were home a lot more.

Thanks for your help :)

So when she falls asleep feeding is she done for the night? What time is she up for the day? I know you're struggling with EWs, but if she's going to bed early she's already done a full night.

I get having to work around school runs, I have the same problem and it can definitely mess with naps. What times do you have to be out the house? Maybe we can find a routine to work around it if one nap isn't going well

Thanks :)

So she was getting up for the day around 6:10.
But twice in the past 3 days she has woken screaming at 5:50 and 5:20 on two different days. The first time I fed at 6 (feeding only thing that calms her down). This morning I did PD for 20 mins, she was quiet (slept??) until 5:55, then up again. I fed 6:15, and she fell asleep feeding until 7.

Here is our last few days...
Sunday 1/11
Woke for day 5:50 screaming
Nap 11:35-12:55
Fell asleep feeding 6:40

Monday 2/11
6:11
12-1:31

Tues 3/11
6:15
12-2:15

Wed 4/11
4:57 cries out, 5:20-5:40 screaming
Up for day 5:55, fed 6:13

So this whole really EW (before 6) is new...I have pushed her to one nap and she can do it quite happily...except for the EW. Which could be OT? But then she struggles to have a second nap even if the first is short...so doesn't seem OT!

Any advice?

This morning she was up at 5:45. I have been trying PD but she's absolutely furious about it.

Any suggestions? How to get wake up back to 6:30/7am? Thanks xx

Last night was our worst in ages.
She was asleep 6:50 while feeding, and because she'd had a good dinner (she scarcely eats) I thought we might have a good night...not so!
She woke screaming at 10:40, I have panadol thinking it was teeth. Then again 11:20-11:30 manta crying, then 4:10 mantra crying, and awake for the day at 5:55. She lay back down when I PD, and stayed lying for 20mins, but if I step away she gets upset.

Is it OT? Separation anxiety? Teething? I have no idea anymore and am just so tired!

I am wondering if she'd prefer a shorter A time to bed and she's getting OT by the end of the day. That could definitely cause NWs and EWs. You said that you pushed her to one nap quite easily, so maybe she could do a bit longer in the morning so it's not such a stretch to BT.  From what you say she seems to cope fine with the day, but is pretty much crashing at bedtime. What do you think about trying a set nap a bit later and keeping BT set at 7?

Hi again :)
I've been trying the set nap at 12, because I don't think I can extend that morning A time...it's already 6+ hours.
Things aren't getting any better...still waking between 5 and 6am, napping for about 1.5hours, then bed at 7.

Any other thoughts? Should I go back to forcing 2 naps? Problem was even with super short first nap I couldn't get her down to take a second without huge fuss.

I'm now feeding (BF) at 6am or before as she is desperate for it, but she won't drink cows milk/formula/anything to replace BF. I feel like it's verging on reintroducing a night feed- today I was feeding at 5:50am after a 5:30 wake up.

I'm getting desperate. Considering going to overnight sleep school. I am not coping with this level of tiredness and it's affecting how I mother my other children, and my work.

Thanks for your help. Xx

I would stick to the set nap for a few more days as it can take a little while to adjust and see the effect. But if she's really struggling or it doesn't help then by all means try 2 naps again (I had suggested that before to see if we could come up with something that fit around school runs?). Maybe she will go down easier for the second one if she's more tired from starting the day earlier. Then if you get back to a decent WU time she should be able to drop one of them again. But since you've been working on one nap I think you should stick with it for a bit longer otherwise if you're chopping and changing and things get better you won't know what helped, or if they get worse it'll just be confusing and you'll be starting from scratch again.

Good advice, thanks. I think it's been about two weeks now, I'm so tired I can't remember.

And sorry, I do remember you offering to help with school pickup and fitting naps around. He trouble is she won't sleep in the car if my boys are there, and I have to leave early before school to drive around for ages so she will fall asleep. I really want this one nap to work...but today was a 4:10 Cry out, a 5am cry out, 5:10 cry out then up for the day at 5:30. I went in and patted for about 20 mins, but she was awake. Then BF at 5:55 (that in itself makes me want to cry because I want to wean) then she fell asleep feeding. It's like it's going back to being a night feed. Though if I tried to or her in bed after it, there's no way she's be happy about that.

Thanks for your help. Xx

Still struggling...5:30 is regular now. Should I go back to two naps on those 5:30 days? I'm so tired, she's tired, I just don't know what to do. Yesterday she woke my whole family at 5:50. Then we are all tired and cranky.

Why is this so hard!

Thanks :)

No prob going down for naps...sometimes straight to sleep, sometimes mantra crying for a few mins first. Nap is almost always 1h15-1h30 mins.

I feel like I should just suck it up, get used to 5:30, and fit in two naps :(

So her night is 7-5:30 at the moment? And has the nap still been at 12 for 1.5hrs?  If she's really struggling but two naps don't work for you timing-wise could you squeeze in a micro nap in the morning after the school run?  Not even a CN, but like 10-15mins just to take the edge off and get her to the lunchtime nap a bit easier?

I did that yesterday and today, about 1/2 hour each, but may cut it back. She's gone better yesterday, had that short nap then an hour. But today with school it was a 25 min first nap, and a 35 min second nap :/

Thanks :)

So nap 1 was about 10:15-45 both days, and nap 2 was around 2:35 both days. Sunday was in her cot, she mantra cried from 2:25-2:35 and then slept til 3:40.

Monday I had school pickup so she had to sleep in the car, she slept 2:35-3:07 when I had to wake her to get the kids.

This morning she has "slept in" until 5:50!! Yay progress! I'm thinking I'll try one nap today, I have the ability to be home more hopefully so she doesn't nod off in the car. Tomorrow I will be out all day (not by my own choosing) so will be two naps in pram/car.

It seems to me like she's most of the way to one nap but not quite ready to do it every day. Could you maybe switch between one and two nap days depending what time she wakes up? I know it's a bit of a faff and you might prefer going cold turkey to one nap, but if that made things worse I would try to go with the flow a bit more. I did it for about 3 months with my DD1 so if she woke before 6:30 we would do 2 naps and otherwise one. After that she was at the point where she could make it to lunchtime either way.

So with yours, say if she is up before 5:30 you do give her 20mins or so in the car on the way back from school, and then put her down for her 'real' nap about 2.5hrs later. Would she have time for a good 1.5hrs if she sleeps that long? This is why I keep asking about school run times, I'm still not sure when you have to be out!  But it could look something like this:
WU 5:30
Nap 10-10:20
Nap 1-2:30/3
BT 7

If she wakes up later in the morning you know she's ok to make it to 12:00 as she was doing before, and presumably you can let her sleep for as long as she wants then?

Thanks, sounds like a plan. School run is 7:50-8:50ish, some days I go to do errands/work after (she comes with me). Afternoon pickup is 2:30-3:45ish, but I have to get her out of the car around 3:10 to sign out my preschooler.
