Daylight Savings Time
« on: October 15, 2015, 20:35:31 pm »
Hi ladies,

Daylight Savings time is coming up in two weeks here and I'm dreading it! Slowly moving the BT never worked for us. Please share some of your strategies. Thanks

I hate it, wish they'd just leave the time alone.

We end up with a really early WU then just have an OT night next night with NW but then seem OK!

I just jump to new time...pushing it daily never worked for us.

We slowly push WU, mealtimes, nap times - everything, by 15mins for 2/3 days, then again  then again... It helps that it's usually during a school holiday when DH is off so no worries about childcare timings. Of course the actual WU doesn't change right away, but they've both had to get used to lying awake for a while until it's 'time' to get up if they wake early, so it's not too different from that. Of course we get OT but they settle down in the end ;) But I've always preferred to do changes slowly, I know others much prefer the jumping straight in approach :)

I'll probably move in 30min steps.  This year I'm hoping he'll just do it and WU will move after a few days but in previous years I also found moving slowly moving BT didn't work. The 15 min increments just meant he lost sleep over a longer period of time and eventually was losing an hour per night every night because WU didn't shift. What I found was that moving more rapidly and going *beyond* the hour worked. So I prepared to move to 1.5 or 2hrs later (moving in 30 min increments each day) to force WU to shift. Once WU had shifted I could move BT earlier again and WU remained where it should be.

Sorry ladies for not replying sooner. We were away. Thanks to all for responding. I also wish they would just leave the time alone!!!

Creations we used your method previously to move the BT later and it worked great so I think we are gonna do the same with daylight savings time. One question do you increase the nap length?

We jump to the new hour as well. We do a late night and hope that wu is at least at the same time as usual, then we move on with the new time. I hate that it is Sunday, if it was Monday a ewu would not be as important! ;)

No I didn't. Same nap length but moved at the same time as BT so the whole routine moves on... actually I don't remember him having a nap, maybe the time I took him right over the hour to force later WU was the year he had dropped his nap so it was only night I needed to move. But even so, when he was younger I moved everything, naps, food times, everything.

Lol Zoe in that case it's alright :)

Creations thanks I'll do that then.

Thanks ladies! It is not going too good now. So far I moved her BT till 10:00 pm from her usual 9:00 pm but yesterday she took over 1hr to fall asleep which made her BT 10:15pm and today she is up at 6:20am. She is definitely it after an 8hr night. I'm debating if I should give her a long/uncapped nap today and then shoot for 10:30/11:00 BT.

AMJ how's it going?

Cattypads I normally find they adjust after a couple of days, just carry on with new times x

I always try to prepare earlier, but till now it has never worked. I am chicken with pushing BT later. During weekdays he wakes up early and there is no other possible option, since I have to bring him to grandmas before work.
This time, it took Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for him to shift his time. Last two days he woke up around 7, that is ok for us. Hope this lasts!
On EW days I let him sleep as much as possible during the day, but it does not always work.

We are riding it our, as usual. He is waking a little earlier than usual (so do I!), but I guess we will be on track by the end of the week. Things are much better since nap dropping ;)

Zoe, we are ok I guess. Thanks for asking. We reached 11pm BT (since her usual was 9pm) and today she woke up 9am but she has 1-2 OT NWUs. I will keep it at 11pm for another day or two and then slowly will bring it to 10pm which will be 9pm this Sunday.

P.S. But now she is refusing a nap   ::) either because she is OT or OS from a Halloween party we attended today. Gosh now 11pm is way too late if she doesn't nap but I don't want to go back to 9pm since we will be back to square one

Have you shifted BT, nap times and E times to where they need to be?

Hi creations  :)

I am doing them at the same time as usual, meaning for example I put him down for his nap at 2:30pm last week and the same (2:30pm) this week after the clocks changed, am I making sense lol  ???

Yes, making sense. So he's losing an hour sleep per night because you're putting him to bed at the new time but he's waking at the old time?
If your routine was stable before the clock change, so you know it's all as 'right' as it could be then you can force the WU time to move by putting to bed later for a few days.  I had to take my LO past his BT to make WU later because his body clock was so set on that WU time rather than night length.
