habitual night wakenings in two year old
« on: November 23, 2015, 15:27:14 pm »
Hello all;
My almost 2.5 year old has got into a habit of waking 1-2 times a night, crying, and needing me to go see him and pull up his covers in order to fall back asleep.
It all started when my baby was born and I would be worried that my toddlers crying would wake the baby. So when he woke, I would go to him quite quickly. It now seems that any/every time he wakes in the night, that he needs my brief presence in order to transition.

I am exhausted! My baby sleeps better than my toddler! How do I break this need to briefly feel my presence in the middle of the night?

Have you tried talking to him about it out of the moment? I started doing this before DD3 was very verbal as her receptive language was great because she kept shouting on wake ups (not upset bt just loudly announcing she was up and waking the whole house) so we chatted about it during the day - what my expectations were of her etc. Then I would maybe work on helping him learn to manage his blanket himself.
