6 month old frequent NW
« on: December 01, 2015, 15:49:02 pm »
Hello I'm hoping someone can help.
My 6 month old grumpy baby has been NW hourly for a few weeks. She was sleeping 8-10 hours overnight at 8 weeks but slowly wakings have become more frequent. She has been having long naps consistently for about 4 weeks now and that didn't fix her nights. She has some reflux that is managed with positioning and doesn't seem to bother her too much. She is not at all interested in solids although I do offer twice a day. She loves her breastmilk and will feed all night long if I let her. She goes to bed awake but sleepy.
I really need to stop these NW. When your baby waking every 2 hours is a good night then something is wrong!
This is our EASY generally:

WU:6
E:6 (top up 7)
A:6-9
S:9-11
E:11(top up 12)
A:11-2
S:2-4
E:4
A:4-630
E:6
Bed:630/7

You've got a good routine going on there hun, well done you!

Waking that often usually signals discomfort. I would suspect teething as this is a prime age for it to start. Medicating with ibuprofen helps well with teeth, much better than paracetamol. Dyw to give that a try first and see if it settles down and let me know? Xx

Thanks. I'll try that when she wakes tonight. I tried Panadol but it didn't help.

Can you feel any or see any teeth coming through hun? I would try the ibuprofen for a couple of days. If it's not helpful we might need to look at tweaking the routine slightly but as you're getting frequent NW's rather than long drawn out ones and EW I doubt it's routine related xx

No luck so far. Today's EASY was terrible because we were out but she's been in bed for nearly three hours now which never happens. Maybe she needs another A time increase?
Today's EASY:
6-E
7-Solids(small)
9-11-S
11-E
12-solids
130-?10 min car nap
2pm-E
430-E
445-530-S(while feeding)
615-BT

The A times look good. I'd expect shorter napping if they were off.

How often do you feed at the NW's? I'm wondering if the is a little prop going on there perhaps. Wdyt? Does she go to sleep independently for naps and BT? Xx

I put her to bed drowsy but awake for naps and bedtime. She usually looks at me and then just turns her head and goes to sleep.
If I just resettle her overnight she will wake again within 1/2-1 hour and then I'll feed her. So I probably feed her every two to three hours overnight. I'm sure it's a sleep prop. When my husband goes on leave in a few weeks I'll try to only feed 4-5 hourly overnight with his help. She will have a full feed.
She's just gotten into solids the past few days so I'm hoping it will help.

Solids won't necessarily help them go longer overnight I'm afraid contrary to popular belief. Milk is far more calorie dense so will sustain them longer than solids.

When you're ready and you have your DH on board, we'll make a plan to tackle these for you. I do think you have a little prop there. I take it she's BF? It will be so much easier if your DH can help with the NW's then you can pick maybe two times to feed at night. They do know they're not going to get any milk from daddy!  :) xx

Yes she's breastfed. I'll come back for help in a few weeks when we can tackle this as a couple. I think a tooth is about to pop but this has been going on for months.

We have another tooth and the last two nights DD has only work for two feeds. She's also really getting into her solids. Thank you for your help. I'm hoping things continue to improve :)

Yay it's actually so reassuring when you see that tooth pop through isn't it? I've lost count of the number of times I was tearing my hair out because of DD's sleep for a tooth to pop through a few days later. FX it continues to get better for you, if not you know where we are  ;) xx
