3mo drinks at night but not the day!
« on: December 29, 2015, 10:32:43 am »
So my 3mo is a reflux bub and quite a fussy and messy eater. Never been a big milk fan but putting on weight well considering.

However, she's drinking very little (max 100ml or a couple of oz's) at her morning bottle and this follows through to all feeds during the day - fussy and disinterested regardless of where I feed her (I thought she might just be getting distracted).  However, she then wakes during the might about 3 sometimes 4 times through the night (roughly 10.30/11pm, 2.00am, 5.00am) and absolutely skulls up to 170ml/5oz.  How do I get her to do a switch of this little drinking habit? I thought she might have started to drop a night feed but doesn't seem to be happening. I know there is a major growth spurt soon (we had a couple of days of increased eating day and night last week) but this is affecting her ability to sleep well during the day.

She sleeps pretty poorly waking quite often for her paci so I do replug her naps and at night. As a reflux bub I am keeping the paci and hoping she learns to replug herself soon. She goes down for sleep independently though, just with the Paci.
The other night she slept 6.10pm-1.20am so I know she CAN do longer stretches. Should I try resettling or replugging any of the night feeds? If so, which ones? If not, any ideas?

Thank you so much.

It's quite typical for a refluxer to feed more at night than in the day. Is she on any meds for it - how else are you treating it?

Really the only way to turn things around is to reduce the night feeds which should mean she will increase her day feeds. However you really need the reflux to be as under control as possible, and it doesn't sound like things are at present. At this age though 3 feeds a night isn't out of the ordinary, the 10.30 11 is dreamed time and then the other feeds are 3 hours apart.

My two were both refluxers but I did get rid of DS's paci at 4 months because he kept waking for it, although it can help reflux we felt it was worth it to get better sleep and it did help. DD had hers until she was 3 but she never woke for it like DS did.

What flow teats are you using? Is it normal formula or a specialist formula you are feeding too?

Hello Laura,

Thank you for replying. Her reflux, if I'm honest, is getting better so I'm confident the meds are helping (she's on losec) and she's just developing and growing up! The paci is most definitely an issue but she's super sucky and my DS who is 3 immediately found his finger and self-settled but we're now up for thousands of dollars of dental work starting from 5. I know we'd all get much better sleep but I really don't want to give it up.

I've been using it in the night now to see if she'll settle before offering a feed. Last night she slept 7pm-12.00am (feed) then again at 3.30 (paci) and then at 5.00 (feed). I also managed to get all her bottles into her yesterday which is the first time ever. She took a small feed at 7.00am (I've decided to start waking her just in the morning to set a little rhythm if possible) and I watched her cues and took her to her room at 1hr15 A.
She wriggled her way from her side to her tummy a few nights ago and slept from 6.30pm-3.30am which was unbelievable but because she's swaddled and can't roll over yet she can't do that consistently and won't let me settle her like that at the beginning of a sleep.

I'm hoping a combination of solids, sitting up, and learning to put the paci back in will help her consolidate her nap and nights....

She's using variable flow teats which are working well. She was on thickened formula but paed told me to take her off it - it wasn't agreeing with her anyway.
