Second nap time for 6 month old
« on: January 04, 2016, 07:20:02 am »
Hi everyone,
Trying to nail 6 month old's EASY. Had been gradually increasing first A as kept getting 1hr 15 nap....now up to 3hr 5min first A which seems long to me for this age? Also it leaves me with a very late second nap around 3pm if I'm going to maintain this A time throughout the day...
Yesterday was this
Wu 7
A 7-10
S10.05-12-10
A12.10-3.00
S 3.00-4.10
A 4.10-6.10
Bt 6.10
Nw 7pm, 1pm,  1pm, 5:30
Usually up for day around 7-7:30
She wakes crying at night and goes bts fairly easily with rocking or bottle. She is otherwise an independent sleeper but I cheat with Nw as it's easier....something I will prob have to tackle at some stage.
Was thinking of moving second nap earlier today as she seemed really tired during second A yesterday and woke crying from second nap. Even though it was 1hr 15 was thinking it was maybe an ot nap. She has always been very sensitive to waking after 1 or 2 sleep cycles if her A time is not exactly right so quite hard to judge whether ot or ut on nap length alone....her night always seems a bit ot with multiple early waking too.
Any ideas?
Was looking at sample routines and no one else seems to have second nap as late as 3pm for 6 month old. Was thinking maybe of going for set nap times as she starts nursery next week...Maybe 10 and 2?

I did set nap times at that age with DS. He did:
WU: 7
S: 9:30-11
S: 1:30-3/3:30
BT 6:30/7
This routine lasted for a nice long time - until 10/11 months.

It looks like she's getting a decent amount of day sleep so I'm wondering if she's a bit UT at BT since the day is only 11 hours long and if that is leading to NWs.

I know what you mean but that is actually the maximum amount of sleep she ever gets because her naps are so variable....sometimes we get 2 x 1hr 15 naps and sometimes 2 x 45. Thought increasing the a had helped but wondering should i cut it right back again....Today for example was
Wu 7.20
S 10.25-11.40
A 11.40-2:30
S 2:30 -3.15
Bt 6
Already 2 x Nw screaming  :(
Would love set naps if I thought she would sleep a decent amount for them.....then again it's not like I have pinned down her A time exactly either so changing the times isn'the exactly ideal. I know if I put her in for 9:30 though after 7am Wu she will only sleep 35min (this seems to be an ut nap for her)
Her nights definitely seem more ot at the minute in that she wakes up lots at the start crying then settles for longer periods from 11 usually. I'm really stuck with her tbh. Not sure what to do for the best  ???
Any thoughts?

I found that those early NWs were mostly from OT built up over time and it can take a while to get past them.

I just reread your initial post more closely and realized you said you were increasing A time because the first nap was only 1h15. I would actually consider that restorative and go with the A time that gets you that nap length. Of, if you really want the pm nap to be earlier, you could pull the am nap earlier and accept a short nap and then you'd have a shorter A until the pm nap. Some moms on here have had lots of success with that. I know one mama was even waking her LO at 40 minutes in the am to get a long pm nap.

Ex:
WU 7
S 9:30/9:45-10/10:15
S: 1-2:30/3
BT: 7

If you do keep the later pm nap, I think you definitely need to push BT out or you'll start to get longer, harder to resettle NWs.
