8 month old nap troubles
« on: January 23, 2016, 15:45:19 pm »
Hi, I commented before regarding my little guy's naps a couple months ago. Things started to get better but he just turned 8 months old and things are now taking a turn for the worst and I can't figure it out. His naps are all over the place. He is still on a 3 nap schedule because he hasn't recently had a day where he gets more than 1 nap that is longer than an hour so he would never make it to bedtime without a 3rd nap. I've been keeping track of our EASY for the past week and would love if I could get some advice:

He sleeps through the night but usually wakes up after exactly 11 hours and still seems sleepy but won't go back to sleep. After he wakes up early from naps I try to put him back down but he never goes back. I think he did once ever after he cried for nearly an hour (with me doing PU/PD). When he has days where his naps are really terrible I try to get him to bed early but he just wakes up earlier. He never "catches up" on his sleep. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated! He's a very independent sleeper (usually falls right asleep within 5 minutes of going in the crib) and the few naps that are an hour long make him such a happy baby compared to the short ones when he gets super fussy! Thanks!

Hi there!  I think I tell you what the problem is, your little guy is not awake long enough. He's not tired enough to go to sleep.  Most babies his age are awake for at least 3 hrs and he's only awake for 2 and a bit.  I can see you have him on a 12 hr day which is great so I would recommend you get him out of the house in the morning and extend that morning A time and you'll get better naps.  It'll probably take about a week for everything to settle down, between you pushing his A times and the sleep evening out but you'll likely notice results quite quickly.  Most babies drop their CN by 6 months so he's long overdue.
Swimming is a great activity for keeping baby awake because it's a such a sensory wonderland.  Music class or a play group is great fun too.  I found walks were a little dicey for my boys just because it's a little too soothing and they'd fall asleep but maybe your LO doesn't.  I'd extend his A time by 30 minutes right away, across all A times and 4 days later push for another 30 minutes.  At that point you will definitely need to drop the CN or your nights will go out the window!  :o

Thank you! I had an idea he wasn't awake long enough but he just seems to get soooo tired and cranky. But perhaps that's just bc the previous sleep period wasn't long enough and he's stuck in the overtired/under tired cycle. I will try to extend his A times and see what happens. Thanks!

Definitely it could be as a result of the previous short naps, it can also be boredom.  Babies can be confusing wee things sometimes.  Good luck!
