Maybe he's just too cold?
« on: March 07, 2016, 19:49:31 pm »
Our house is fairly cool, esp in the winter, and DS2 strikes me as needing a bit more warmth. Today he napped in the sunny warm bedroom for AGES and hardly stirred. He also sleeps well next to me in the sling.

But I'm mindful of overheating and SIDs. Argh, how do you tell?

I'm going to try some of those gro sleepsuits first, see if they help.

How cool is cool though? DD2 and DD3 prefer it cooler - when DD2 was a baby/young toddler we kept her room at 16.5 °C to keep her sleeping happily. We keep the heat higher now for DD1 so DD2 & 3 just use less blankets/wear super light pj's. But still 18°C overnight.

I don't regularly measure...but the monitor I just turned on again tonight said under 16 and the little strip we have downstairs generally reads around 15 degrees C.

Hmm yeah he may be a bit chilly then! Hope the gro sleepsuits do the trick for him. SIDS guidlines here say to keep baby at a similar temp that you are comfortable at.

Well yes! We are comfortable. But I notice when we go anywhere with 'normal' centrally heated temps we all get too hot. It was 22deg in hospital and DS1 was practically melting...and stripping!!

Lol you all must be hot blooded! We keep our daytime temp at 20/21°. Upstairs anyways, the basement is always cooler.

We've just got used to it, I guess. I love warm in the summer, but I don't love centrally heated, stuffy warm. A log fire though, that's a different matter...I must be bonkers!

DS was found outside in the snow at the weekend with no socks underneath his boots and no t-shirt under his jumper. I did try but he was having none of it.

For the 2 months of cold weather we get our house can get down to around 15C and worth both boys being born in winery I was told if awake 1 more layer than i was wearing ... i actually did one more than DH as i tended not to feel the cold and if asleep they should feel warm behind the neck but not sweaty  I found if I had them in a singlet onesie and wrap plus 2 blankets they were right.... i think though i used less than most parents as they dont feel the cold at all

Re: sids - I read somewhere to feel their ears during sleep.  If they are hot to the touch, they're overheating.  I have J in a fleece swaddle.  It's pretty warm but her ears are cool.

I'm with Heidi!  If my house were 16 I'd be losing my marbles lol, 20/21 around here (but turn it down to about 18 overnight).  But yes a sleep suit might be a good idea to make sure he's cozy.  I've also heard of the "one extra layer" rule meaning they should wear an added layer to what you are wearing, but as you seem to like the house quite cool he might need a little extra warmth :)

I'd waken cold at 15/16!!!  I'd say extra layers will do the trick.

DS and DH love COLD room with super warm duvets (DS uses 3 lol)  I prefer the air warmer.  You can also try a baby hat to sleep in.  For me that helps.  HTH

Don't think the HV would be comfortable with a baby wearing a baby hat indoors koe.

Those fleecy sleep suits are great. DS used to wear those (with a regular cotton long sleeved long leg baby grow under

But I'm mindful of overheating and SIDs. Argh, how do you tell?
You wake them up by putting your hand all the way inside their clothes to feel their chest and back. You can't tell my touching hands, head, feet.  I risked it several times (and sometimes woke DS) because I was worried.

I've had the monitor on at my end overnight for a couple of nights, just to see what the temp is doing. It goes orange in 16-20 and blue below, and was orange all the way to about 4am. Hmmm.

No, I know hats aren't advised here. I don't even have one on him in the car; I prefer a hood for that because it can't get in his eyes.
