4 to 6 am - 1 month old seems uncomfortable?
« on: March 09, 2016, 19:25:48 pm »
Hi everyone! I'm wondering about early waking from my 1 months old DD.
She has silent reflux but is not on meds, she sleeps with a wedge and humidifier in her Moses basket near our bed. She also have a tendency to be colicky. She cough and is congested throughout the day but it's very mild.

Naps are fine. She sleeps anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Sometimes with the paci, sometimes without. When she wakes up early and won't settle, I move her to her swing or in the sling to finish her nap. She also have a catnap around 5/6 for a total of at least 3 naps a day (sometimes 4 depending of the lengths of the naps).

Bedtime is all over the place. Some nights we can have her in bed by 7:30-8:00, other times it can be 22:00! (We are working very hard on that but it's a long process!) However, ALL nights around 4/5 am she starts fussing, coughing and is way more congested than she is in the day. She feeds around 3 am and it's a full feed so it's not hunger. I put her pacifier when she wakes every 20 minutes until it's wake up time (6:30-7:00). When she cries I put her in my bed and most of the times she falls back asleep with her paci. I want to break that habit but don't know how!  :-\

Ssh-pat does not seems to work on her she gets even more mad (tried many many times for BT and naps).... Any idea?

Hi there! Honestly, it's very normal.  Lots of babies start to get fussy and loud around this time of the night/morning.  Our little guy was SO loud, it was impossible to sleep through.  One other thing you could try is lying her on her left side, with a towel roll under the sheet to keep her in place.  My DS2 had reflux and that, with the elevated mattress, was a huge help

I agree that lots of babies are unsettled around that time. My DS either grunted and groaned from 4-6 or woke at 4 and needed lots of help getting back to sleep. I often popped him into the swing after the 3/4 am feed and that helped.

My DS2 is 6 weeks old and does this, also has silent reflux. Mostly starts for us around 5am after a feed, only settles when sleeps on his tummy on our chests. Not ideal being awake from 5am but extends his sleep for an hour or so.
Have you tried any nasal drops to ease congestion?

Thanks everyone! She already sleeps on her side she seems more comfortable that way. Happy to her she's not the only one lol
And yes, she sleeps way better on our chest too :)
And yes nasal drops, but we try to avoid it at night because she hates it so much she screams her heart out! :(

With the congestion my little one had this too pretty much for the first 8 weeks until I said to someone she's had a cold for 8 weeks and they asked me if I have the heating on a lot which it was. They told me it was likely the heating drying out the mucus in her nose making her congested and to have it on less.

I put it on less and it made such a difference and the congestion cleared up. Mentioned it to a friend with a similar problem and when she reduced her use of central heating her daughters congestion cleared too. So if u do use central heating might be worth a try .... If you don't sorry for the useless suggestion  :)

Hey there just wondered if you might give reflux meds a try? Or has a doctor already deemed that unnecessary? In hindsight I think our DS would have really benefitted from reflux meds - DD had them and I'm sure they made a big difference, I was just lacking in confidence with DS so when the health visitor told me it wasn't necessary, I didn't push for them :-\

^^^This!  Elevated mattress, sleeping on the left side, holding upright for 30 minutes after each feed.  These all helped but ultimately, it was the meds that made the difference.

Keep us posted Haribo2012! And lauradj we do all of this already. For the meds the doctor said that we will until she's 3 months to see if she still needs it by then..!
For now things seems to get better. We moved her to her crib and she sleeps until 6:30-7. Maybe the fact that I heard every little sound she was making (because she was in our bedroom) didn't help it  ::)

It is a lot harder to ignore the moans and grunts when they're right beside you!

Hey, posted on your other thread, did you want to keep this one going or shall we close it and focus on the other one?

We can close it, so far that morning grunting is less disruptive for both of us when she's in her room  ;D
