6 weeks baby NW
« on: March 22, 2016, 08:31:34 am »
I have a 6 week old baby and I've been traying to stablish a routine so I can get him to sleep at least 5 hours straight during the night. I breast feed and the routine is like this:
8 o'clock feed
Activity
Usually sleeps for 20 min or half an hour
11 feed
Usually sleeps for 30 hour in the car because we go pick up his little 2 year old sister at school
2pm feed
Usually sleeps the hole 3 hours till 5am or more if I let
5pm feed
Sleeps around 1 more hour
Shower
7pm first clusters feeding
Gets fuzzy and usually doesn't sleep
9 pm second cluster feeding sleeps till 12:30/1:30 that varies a lot
Wakes up again sometimes at 3, some at 4, some at 5, that also varies a lot.

What can I do to make this NWs stop?
Thank you!

Hi there, and welcome to BW.

Your new baby is so small, and at this age lots of night wakings are very common. Their tummies are so small they need to feed regularly even at night. I know this is super hard on you.

It is a little hard to see from your post, but it looks like your LO is sleeping very little in the daytime. It is quite common at this age for babies to sleep for lots of the day. The BW way encourages following your baby's lead, particularly in the early days. Have you read any of the links I the FAQs? This one might be a good place for you to start.

Getting started - how I survived the first 3 months

Are you following these sorts of ideas? It should help but it won't be an overnight fix. Are you able to get any rest during the daytime at all, perhaps when your older lot is at school and your small baby is sleeping?

Thank you for th reply!
Yes, he sleeps less than he should during the day. And that happens because sometimes, with my little one and all the duties and don't have the time needed to make him sleep and put him on the crib... And when I do that, most of the times he wakes up right after I put him in the crib swaddled. He sleeps very well with me, but not in his crib during the day, vir at night he sleeps weel on his crib. I don't know if he is sensible to the noises of the day, or if I'm not taking the time needed for him to really sleep before putting him down.
And I almost never sleep during the day, because when ones sleeps the other is up or Something comes up to be done, so sleeping during the day is a hard task for me!"
I'm gonna read the link you sent! Thank you so much!

I imagine it is so much harder with he second one when you already have another child to run around after. Are you able to use a sling/wrap at all to help your baby sleep in the daytime? It might help your baby to catch up on day sleep and then give you all more rest at night time.

This is a great suggestion! I used a sling quite a bit with DS in the early days. If he was hard to settle or woke early from a nap, I just popped him in and went on with my day.

Good sugestion! I'm gonna try that.
But things seem to be getting worse. This is the second night my LO is waking up every 2/ 2 and half our. Even with the 2 cluster feedings and the dream feed. He is 6 weeks old. Do you think it could be a growth spurt? If so, how long does it take usually?
