3week old feeding hourly overnight !
« on: April 19, 2016, 03:43:01 am »
Not sure if this should be posted elsewhere?

My 3 &1/2 week old has had three terrible nights. This is the worst night and I am shattered. He has woken every hour since we came to bed at 10pm!! He's woken by a gassy tummy and I think by reflux too. This has been the worst of the three nights. He nurses each time he wakes but I think he's also using me for comfort. He just nursed and wouldn't settle so I gave him a dummy which caused him to fart a lot (prior to the dummy he was wrything unable to get comfortable). Can anyone help me please?! I am exhausted!!

He is breast fed. Am I doing something wrong? Am I eating something I shouldn't be?
Is this silent reflux?

He was sleeping well and would sleep in 3 or 4 hour blocks overnight, what has gone wrong?

It's the gripey tummy and wind and ?reflux waking him.

There is a growth spurt around the 3 week mark so it could be that.  You may also need to work really hard at burping him after a feed -- are you getting some good burps from him right now after feeds?

Hello, yes might have well been a growth spurt. I give him a tiny bit of gaviscon after his last feed before bed and so far, touch wood, that has calmed things down.
I do get good burps from him in the day but not always at night. Is there a special night time technique? I think I remember reading somewhere that it can be hard/no need to wind bf babies at night as they are relaxed do don't take in as much air?? Does that sound correct? I try to keep him upright on my chest for 20mins or so which is very tiring for me!

IME, this relaxed baby taking in no air is craziness. DS took in loads of air when feeding at night because my milk was more plentiful and he was too sleepy to cope with the flow. He struggled enough in the day time so I had to lie back to feed him, especially at night, and burp really well. If he woke an hour after a good feed, I'd do tummy massage and push his legs up into his belly to help move the gas along and not perpetuate the gas problem by putting more in.
