Baby won't sleep from 7:45-10:45 pm?
« on: April 19, 2016, 15:06:31 pm »
Hey! My son is 4 months old and has started waking up after I put him down for the night and staying up till 10:45-11. He is fussy during this period and nothing will put him to sleep.

This is our EASY (on a good day)

E - 7 am
A - 1 hr 1/2
S - 8:30 am
E - 10:30 am
A - 2 hrs
S - 12:30 pm
E - 2:30
A - 2 hrs
S - 4:30 (45-1 hr catnap)
E - 5:30
A - 2 hrs
S - 7:30 pm

He will go down easily at bedtime but wake up after 45 mins - 1 hour and not go back to sleep until around 10:45. I try to treat it as a night waking & nurse him back to sleep but his eyes are wide open and he shows no signs of heading back to dreamland. Is there something I need to do differently with his schedule? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Before I give any advice, I want to make sure I'm reading your routine correctly. Is he sleeping right up until the next E?

Do you think he might be getting too much sleep in the day? Do you know how much sleep he needs in 24h to be rested and happy? One possibility is that he isn't quite tired enough at BT and a shorter CN may help with that.

Does he cry when he wakes at 7:45 or does he wake up playing and happy and then gets fussy?

I have tried keeping him up longer during the day but he usually can't go longer between naps. I can try a shorter catnap. I'm working on extending his morning wake time to 2 hours but he can't handle it yet.

He wakes up fussing at 7:45. I usually give him a few minutes to see if he will settle but once he reaches the mantra cry I go in immediately.

If he's not ready, I wouldn't extend it. Some LOs prefer a short morning A time.

If it's just a mantra cry you don't need to go in. Mantra crying is an LOs way of trying to settle. I would wait until it escalates into an "I need you cry." If picking him up and feeding, rocking, etc aren't working then I would try just leaving him in the crib and rubbing or patting his back. He may still cry but he will know that he's not alone and that you're there to help him sleep.

Is he BF or FF my DS1 became unsettled between 7pm & 10pm & one day I was out & DH gave him a bottle of EBM (he was BF) & he finished the bottle & so DH gave him some more & that was the first time he settled, We had to top up my BF with EBM for a while (I pumped after feeding) to give him more milk while my supply built up, but it was basically he was still hungry at night

Hey there, just wondered what he's like during that first A? Do you have to wake him in the morning? Is he really sleepy, almost like he didn't really want to get up and needs that 2h nap to feel ready to face the rest of the day? I may be way off, but just wondered if it's possible he may be treating that initial sleep after BT as a CN and in effect, starting his night properly at 10:45pm, then treating morning WU more like a NW?? And then up properly after that first nap... Perhaps not, just a thought, feel free to dismiss :)

He is exclusively breastfed. In the morning I sometimes wake him up but he often gets up on his own. Occasionally I won't wake him and he gets up at 7:45 at the latest. I have noticed that if I have any caffeine whatsoever during the day the problem is worse so I have been cutting it out completely and it has helped some. If he needs more A time when could I best fit it in?

I would probably put it in for the last A. You could try a slightly shorter CN (maybe 30 minutes) which would make that last A a touch longer without pushing BT too late.
