'Average' 4 week old sleep?
« on: April 22, 2016, 05:32:10 am »
Hello, I know every baby is different and does things st their own speed etc but I was just wondering what the night of a 4 week old looks like for others?
How long does other 4 week olds sleep for in each sleep block? Ie my 4 week old slept for a 3 hour and a 3 and half out block last night so two feeds until 0625am is this sort of average?
He's breast fed and I'm just curious what other babies his age do!

I'd say lots of mums would give their eye teeth for that kind of a night ;) Sounds like you're doing well.

Mine woke 3hrly on the dot but he'd spent a few days in special care where they fed 3hrly on the dot.

Some babies who wake more often that that, say every hour are struggling with gas and looking to suckle to move their gut along and get rid of the gas. That can be helped by burping them well, lying back to feed so they can cope with the flow of milk better but sounds like all is going pretty well for you.

Hello, good to know you think we're on track although very aware how quickly things can change.
Yes, agree with what you said about frequent feeding. You replied to my previous post on my lo having an awful night when he was 3 weeks old and fed hourly. I too thought it was for digestive reasons and touch wood things have improved with a small dose of gaviscon before bed.
Will wait and see how things progress!

I think four weeks was around the time we had evenings of screaming/being unsettled and then needing to sleep next to someone in order to stay asleep. Gripe water and cluster feeding helped, but for a few months I co slept as it was the most restful option for everyone.

We were definitely still on 3hrly wakings I believe with all 3 of mine. That certainly sounds within the realm of normal.

Thanks. And those timings are from the start of one wake up to the start of the next, rather than how long he sleeps? For example his last feed before we went up to bed tonight started at about 2130, he next woke for a feed at 0100, then next feed 0400.... So is that 3&1/2 hours, 3 hours?

So all that good sleeping went out the window last night with lo feeding every two hours. He fed every two hours during the day too, could set your watch by him! A growth spurt?!

I think night also exacerbated by the fact that he was quite 'refluxy' overnight and then I noticed the books I had propped the head of his bed up with had gone! So this might have made things worse.
