Crib to cot?
« on: May 03, 2016, 13:39:51 pm »
Never done this before, last time it was hammock to cot with an older baby. This time it's bedside crib to bedside cot (a Troll one with an up and over side).

So we have just started to get some independent naps (yay!), but when things go awry I go into the room, pick him up and stay on the bed with him for the whole nap. That, and some horrendous nights recently with illness and teething, mean we will use the cot as a proper bedside cot. At least for a while, anyway.

We have set up the cot in the main bedroom but we can't fit it and the crib next to the bed at the same time. Nor can we have one on either side of the bed. So at some point we will have to take the crib down and just go with the cot. Yikes.

First step is to let him play in there when he's well rested and in a good mood. What then? Naps? Nights?

If you're using it exactly the same as a bedside sleeping place, it's the same really other than a bit bigger?  Sorry just wanted to make sure I have the right kind of image in my head!  If that's the case I wouldn't personally bother doing much of a 'transition' as such as I suspect the difference will be more noticeable to you than him.  I'd just go for it!

Bigger, slightly lower down and different sides (slats with an airwrap bumper rather than solid sides). For naps he likes to scratch the side of the crib and kinda snuggle into it.

It just looks so big!!!

I know! They look like such tiny people in those big beds, and then all of a sudden you'll walk in and go whoa, that's a child, not a baby!  Clearly remember that moment with DS.  Have you tried the cot yet?

If he is messing with the cot side to sleep it might be best to move him quick before he gets 'attached' to the idea though??

Does he roll yet? I forget how old he is  :-[. I found with Thomas that once he was rolling he suddenly needed that space as he wanted to be able to squirm and get comfortable. I transitioned from sleepyhead to crib, then to cot bed within a week or so. And the silly baby rolled onto his tummy and slept that way instead.

He's six months on Sunday! Yes, been rolling a couple of months and is up on hands and knees. I guess I want him to have a chance to look properly at the new sides before he needs to go to sleep, yk?

I get your thinking, but equally it never caused an issue when I moved Thomas. He fiddled with them for a few minutes and then ended up nodding off.

I know independent sleep is new, but I wouldn't want the side of the bed to become a proper part of it isywim? Plus if up on hands and knees the chicco is getting unsafe isn't it? Or very soon  :-*.

Yes. It's only a matter of days before we move him, I think. I tend to be there for most of his sleep atm, so I'm happy he's safe.

I know what you mean...my DD uses her Moses basket to snuggle and I fear when she makes the transition to the cot she'll be constantly looking for the top to rub her head against?!?! Let us know how the transition goes!!!! It's some I have to do with my 4 month old!!!!!

First night in the cot went well and he's chatting to DS1 and playing in there now. Naps may be a different story!

Was an eventful night though - DS1 requested a camp out with daddy in the garden. Apparently it was COLD....
