12mths Long NW
« on: May 20, 2016, 06:08:50 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if you can help me with some nightwakings we're having. My son is 12 months old and is really good with his naps, usually 2hrs in the morning and at least 1 hr in the afternoon. I'm pretty sure he's started with the 2-1 nap transition in the last few weeks because bedtime became a battle and has had to be put back to 7:30/08:00.

He has also started waking for long periods in the night 2-3 hours (not every night though). We've tried comforting and putting him back down, cuddling him back to sleep (but he just gazes and chats to us), putting him down and staying with him but he stays awake until he's exhausted and then goes back to sleep.Because of this we started cutting his PM nap short so that he only has 30-45mins and no later than 4pm. Then we had 2 nights of sleeping through and thought we'd cracked it. But last night he was awake for nearly 3 hours again.

His normal EASY is:

06:30 WU
07:00 Breakfast
10:00 Bottle
10:00-12:00 Nap
12:30 Lunch
15:00 Bottle
15:30-16:00 Nap
17:30 Dinner
19:30/20:00 Bottle and BT depending how tired he seems.

He is at the childminders 3 days a week so his routine is more erratic when he is there. This was yesterday:

06:30 WU
07:00 Breakfast
10:00 Bottle
10:25-11:05 Nap
12:30 Lunch
14:10-15:15 Nap
15:30 Bottle
17:30 Dinner
19:30 Bottle and Bedtime

I just don't understand why he sleeps through fine some nights and then other nights he's up for hours. We've even given in and give him a bottle a few times but he just drinks it and stays awake anyway!

Thank you.

Hello it could be developmental - there is a a big recession at 12 months - or it could be that he needs to cut his day time sleep.

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

You could start to cap the one hour nap now?

Hi,

My son is now 14 months (just today) and is still having the long NWs. Last night we were up 12:30-4:00. We moved him down to 1 nap (11:00-14:00) because we thought maybe he was getting too much day sleep. Now he seems to have an ok night and then a long NW every other night. We're at our wits end. Is it worth trying PUPD or is he too old for that now? We had success with it getting him to nap but that was at about 8 months.

Thank you

Ouch that is a long NW! Did you try medicating for teeth? Did he seem like he was in pain?

What are you doing when he is up at night Hun? Is he an independent sleeper?
