Routine help
« on: May 22, 2016, 06:34:01 am »

Hi, we are struggling with the nights, i think its be because of our routine, but not sure what the next step is.
Maks is 10 months and his day generally looks like this
E6.50 wu
A
S 11-12.45
E 1.30 lunch
A
S 4.25-5.15
Bt 8.50

The problem is that his A time is generally near on 4 hours, if i want to get him off to sleep earlier for nap 2 i have to walk around with him.
And at night he literally wakes every 3 hours! On the dot and even after bf he wont go back to sleep easily.

It looks like 2-1 is beginning: From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

Happy to help you through - anything you need to work around in terms of routine?

He is a good sleeper, naps are generally not a problem, he still has a dummy and generally will fall asleep or get drowsy in my arms and then i put him into his cot.

He woke at 6.30 today
Went for his 1st nap at 10.40 and is still asleep....

I think he is just catching up after abdisturbed night really.
What do i do with his second nap? Do i shorten it? Im happy to feed him once or twice but just not every 3 hours. Im back at work now too, so its not so easy....

This makes sense, but the source of the disturbed nights I think is too much day sleep. Do you think it could be a prop issue if you're feeding at every waking?

I'd probably cap that second nap a bit shorter and do BT a little earlier. What are your thoughts on a short first nap and a long second nap?

^^I was thinking short first, long second too.  That way the afternoon nap becomes the long established one for when it drops to 1 nap.  I think with my DS we did a 45min nap in the morning (I think maybe 9-9:45ish, but he was an early riser) and the second nap at 12:45/1pm which was the long one.

You are probably right about the disturbed nights.
His second nap was 30 ish minutes and he settled for bed after 3.15A time, he would have done more, but no chance of settling any earlier for him.

Hm the only thing with a first short nap would be gauging when to put him down for his second sleep so it turns out a long nap. Although he is a calm baby he will want to be held if he doesnt get much sleep, that would mean no 121 time with my 2.7 year old. That would be the only thing that would worry me about the short nap in the morning.
I will see how he does tonight, he does like bf but i would say he isnt overly attached to it and he will often refuse it in the night.

Yes timing that second nap can be tricky.  It has to be a short enough A that they don't get OT, but long enough to give you a good solid nap.

Ill roll with what we have and if the nightd are still short and disturbed in the next week or so i will really consider changing the naps around.
He went to bed at 8.30 and still asleep, hasnt been 3 hours yet, see how that goes

Well he slept for 4 hours in his cot then woke around 12.30, i think he woke a coupke of times after but they were brief wakings, unsettled in the early hours, but overall a 10 hour night! Which is an inprovement, ill see if i can cap his mornibg nap to 1.5 hours and go with the 30 minute nap in pm

Maks is st the childminders 2days a week and yesterday it worked out that he had a short nap in the morning and a long nap in the afternoon, it was very difficult to settle him for bt, he would not settle after 4 hours, he did 4.30A and woke after an hour and took ages to fall back to sleep. More A before BT?

Sometimes yes, they do need a longer A time after a good nap and if he took a long time to fall asleep again after his early NW it could also suggest UT.  Given that was his first (?) day doing a short am, long pm nap I would maybe just hold for a few days and see what happens, if it is a regular pattern then it will become pretty clear.  I wouldn't want you to make any drastic changes after 1 day of that routine.  That said, BW always says to listen to your baby, so if he really seems UT at BT you could push a bit, maybe 15mins even and hold for a few days and go from there.
