Fenugreek- gas pains??
« on: May 31, 2016, 17:24:08 pm »
Have any of you taken fenugreek supplement? My supply has been low for a couple weeks so I started taking these and am wondering if it may be the cause for extreme gas pains in my LO. It's the only change I've made in my diet...

Any has similar issues?

Fenugreek tea is reccomended as something that can help with gas here. But it can be,every baby is different and your baby may reacting to it.
Is the fenugreek helping you your supply? Maybe you can stop taking it for a week or so, to see if it makes any difference.

I am definitely going to stop it and see. Curious if the tea form is different than the capsules. I googled it and saw mixed information- as with everything on the internet I suppose. Figured I'd ask here too :)

It has helped a little but I'm still struggling to keep up. Going to try Fennel tea instead.

if it is causing an oversupply and therefore overactive letdown that could lead to gas

I'm still on the lower side so I don't think that was it but who knows! I did stop and she did settle some. I was also having to supplement with some formula so that could have been it and not the fenugreek. I have a forceful let down and was keeping her on during it (used to always unlatch her until it was done) because my supply was low. That could also have been it??

Thanks ladies

Why do you think your supply is low?

^^ that's what I wondered. OALD with low supply would be unusual.

She would drain both sides and then cry. I'd relatch her and she would suck but then start crying. If I did compressions, nothing would come out. If she was patient I could distract her for a bit and then relatch and would have another let down.

I've been pumping after 2 feedings a day and noticed I'm a little more full so hoping I'll catch up to her needs soon. I think she's having a growth spurt

DS did this too - with the OALD, there were a couple of reasons, I think:
- he was used to immediate letdown, almost as he was latching, so he got frustrated when he had to wait at all.
- he liked the slower flow after letdown stopped being so forceful and then he'd be shocked by the second letdown.

GS is fun times with baby who's used to getting lots of milk immediately, they don't have to develop much patience and they're wondering what's going on - there's always been heaps of milk here, suddenly there's not, yk? To me, that signals that you have a good supply level - satisfies her most of the time and the GS is achieving what it should.

I think you're absolutely right. She's definitely not used to working for milk. I think that's why she does so much better with a bottle too.

She's been wanting to nurse every 2 hours a night again....awful!
