10 month naps. Need a predictable routine
« on: July 30, 2016, 03:41:41 am »
Hi
A couple of months ago i sleep trained my dd and things got a lot easier, we mostly had great naps 2 times a day for atleast an hour she was happy and bubbling. But for the last month and a half things just got out of hand. She is refusing her afternoon nap or would just take a 30 min nap. She wakes up at 4/ 4:30 every morning which leads to a really early morning nap at 8ish sometimes a good nap of 1.5 to 2 hours but then no nap after that. She is cranky and clingy all of the time. When she shows tired signs i follow the pre nap routine (during which she only wants to play and babble) and then when i put her doen she would just play the entire time. I think it would be too soon for 1 nap since she is so over tired. Please help me. Dd have never been on a scheduled routine since wake up time has never been the same time and naps are all over the place and i am desperate to get some routine going. I never know when to put her down anymore. Please can you help me get her on a routine so that she goes for a nap at the same time each day. She will be 11 months in a week

Hiya I'm no expert but have been where you are very recently! We are trying this at the moment
Wu 7am
S 9.45 to 10.15
S 1.15 til 2.45+
Bt 7 15 ish

It's worked well far and morning wakeup is gradually getting back to normal with just a few shouts at 5am and then 6am but going back to sleep each time til 7am. It's better than  what we were having where he wouldn't go back to sleep. Then the idea for 2:1 is to gradually reduce the first nap as I can't push it later due to school runs. We stick to these times no matter at the moment to get him used to it.

Thank you for your reply. So you suggest that I put her down for a nap at the same time regardless of her wu time everyday? And if it turns into a long morning nap that i should wake her up? I would leave her until 6am before i go and get her to see whether she would go back to sleep without any luck so far.

I wake after a 30 min nap in the morning.
What does her current easy look like?

It would definitely help if you could post your day in the EAS format so we can get a better idea of what may need tweaking.

10 months is prime time for the 2-1 to begin and so I would definitely give those threads a read. I would attach but my phone isn't allowing.

Your first A of 4hrs is giving you a decent nap of 1.5hrs but as you say because of the early wu it's starting too early in the day and is probably perpetuating the EW. I would set a time of 1st nap to be no earlier than 9am and see if that helps push her wu a little later. You will probably then need to do another short nap about 4hrs or so after that so something like

Wu 5
Nap 9-10.30
Nap 2.30-3.15 (this can be shorter if she can handle a longer A to bed)
BT 6.30

Does she go back to sleep after 4am feed? You'll need to push that first nap later as an early nap can encourage early waking. If you are counting activity time from 6am then give an appropriate A time from 6am. Maybe a 9.30am nap so 3hr30 A time?  Then you need a more appropriate Atime before 2nd nap.  She is probably undertired after 3 hours and that is why she is resisting the nap. You could try 3hr 30 plus. Mine can do 4hr at least after a decent nap.
What do you think?

I will definitely try that she skipped the afternoon nap today because i do not allow any sleep after 16:00 and at 15:45 she was stil awake. she usualy acts tired after 2h and i have the baby whisperer app which suggest that awake time should be 3h.

I read an article earlier that made me realize that at this age the tired signs could be boredom and that makes alot of sense to, lately she seems bored with all of her toys. I try to do new activities with her like painting and playing with dough etc. but all she is intrested in is standing up and cruising i think she will be walking soon.

Lets say she starts waking later i would be happy with anything from 6 as me and hubby gets up at 4:30 i would love to put her to bed later at night since daddy never gets chance to see her only on weekends for and hour or 2. So it would like something like this?

Wu 6:00
First nap 10:00-11:00
Second nap 15:00-16:00
Bedtime 19:30 or 20:00

I will try for a couple of days and let you know how it went. Maybe 20:00 would be to late for this age?

4 hr  A after just an 1hr nap might be a stretch, you know her best though. Ideally one nap would be at least 1hr30 to 2hr. Thats why we are doing a 30 min morning nap to ensure fitting in a good long pm nap before 3/3.30 ish. 8pm might be a little late with a 6am wake up, but days do get longer during the 2:1 I think.

Yes ideally for a nap to be restorative you would want it to be 1.5+ hours. I think an 8pm bedtime after two short naps would be too long and you would end up with OT. The idea is to move from 2 naps where 1 of them lengthen out and your A time increases and cutting the other one down until you have 1 nap occurring around midday.

I have an 8 month old and her day looks like this and is similar to choc's day.
Wu 5.30
Nap 9.30-11.15
Nap 3.15-3.45
BT 7
