6.5 month naps
« on: August 05, 2016, 13:34:40 pm »
Hi I'm looking for some help with my 6.5mo.

An average day looks like this

Wake between 6 and 6.30 - 8oz milk
7.30 breakfast
8.30 nap usually 1.5-2 hours
10.30 8oz milk
11.30/12 lunch

This is where it then goes a bit downhill
She is still stuck in 40minute naps, so 12.30/1 nap for 40 minutes
2.30 8oz
She then is tired again around 5 so I've been giving her another 40 minute nap

6pm 8oz
Bed 7-7.30

She will sleep all night however from 5am every morning is incredibly restless, kicks her legs and cries out. She stays asleep but wakes everyone else up. This is having an impact on us and my 3year old.

I would like to get down to 2 naps and get her to bed earlier but because of the 40minute afternoon nap she is too tired for that so needs the extra cat nap. Should I be waking her from that? If she does go down to 2 naps then how do I fit that around her feed at 2.30? We have only just started weaning and she is eating hardly anything at the moment.

And any idea on how to stop the restlessness at 5am. I don't know what is causing it. I have introduced a DF at about 9.30 when I go to bed in case she's stirring at 5 because she's hungry. However she will only drink 80ml and it doesn't seem to have had any effect. Should I not bother with it?

I should add that she is a very very windy baby. She will often burp hours after she's finished a feed and quite often when she wakes from a nap at 40 minutes I can tell she's still tired so wind her when she will do a few big burps and I then have to resettle her. Aside from that she is very good at getting herself to sleep without any help from me although I do use white noise for nap times.

Hi there!

Have you tried a slightly longer A time between the first and 2nd nap? A 40 min nap usually means UT so she may need 2hr 45 or slightly more to get another good nap.
Also if you start to notice your first nap shortening you will need to push that first A out too. Actually I would be inclined to try and push that one slightly to see if it's stops the 5am restlessness. Often if the morning A is too short it can cause EW.

If she is having a cn how long are you letting her sleep for? Is she resisting BT at all?

Lauren

Hi

I actually tried lengthening it today. So she woke up at 10.30. I kept her awake until just before 1.30. At 2 she was still awake despite being tired so I fed her and she downed 7oz so she was obviously hungry. It seems a 2 nap transition won't fit in with feed times? She ended up falling asleep at 2.45 but still only slept for 45 minutes. Obviously overtired by that point. I've now just given her a bottle at 5.45, she had the whole 8oz and she's just gone to bed just after 6. She never resists bedtime but she does sometimes spend a while chatting to herself etc but unless she's crying I leave her to it and she settles herself.
What would you try and push the dust A to? In September my big girl is starting pre school so with the school run she won't be able to be in bed for a nap before 9.15 so I'm hoping by then she will be able to last until then.

I would go gently with the first A as you're getting a good length nap so you don't want to ruin that. Maybe just start with an extra 10/15 mins.

If 3 hours was too long for the 2nd and she was OT reduce it back to 2hr40/45. How long does she go between feeds?

so she normally feeds at 6.30/6.45, 10.30, 2.30/3 and then 6. we struggled a lot with feeding in the early days and despite many many doctors trips it took until 5 months for her to be diagnosed with silent reflux so its only the last month or so that she has been enjoying her milk so im not pushing the solids too much now that she's finally enjoying her bottle.
We are going on holiday tomorrow so i know that all routine will be out the window but it will be good to have a plan in mind when we get back.

I think you want to be aiming for something like this... What do you think?

Wu 6
Milk 6.30
Nap 8.45-10.45 (is this usually 2hrs?)
Milk 11
Lunch 12
Nap 1.30-3
Milk 3
Milk and BT 6

If the first nap is 1.5 hrs then

Wu 6
Milk 6.30
Nap 8.45-10.15
Milk 10.30
Lunch 12
Nap 1-2.30
Milk 2.30
Nap 5.15-5.30
BT 7

Yeah that looks good. First nap varies but usually somewhere between 1.5 and 2 hours. She occasionally still wakes at 40 minutes but normally can put herself back. With the cat nap would you wake her after 15 minutes? I hate waking her up! And if she refuses to sleep longer than 40 minutes for the afternoon nap what would you do after that?

Yes with the short cn you would need to wake her. It's not nice at first but I find if you can do that nap in the car/buggy it's usually easier to wake them.

If she wakes after 40 mins you will have to go for a 3rd nap at about 4

Thanks for your help! Typically this morning she has woken up 40 minutes into her morning nap!
