4 hour E.A.S.Y and ebf baby
« on: August 08, 2016, 20:26:36 pm »
Just a question here, I have my 5 month old (21 eks) baby on the 4 hr EASY in regard to 2 hours awake, 2 hours nap. I was breastfeeding at wake up and before nap,  so about every 2 hours, but this led to nursing to sleep which I am working on stopping so question is, how often/when to nurse? Is 4 hours too long for a ebf baby? If I nurse her when she wakes, should I offer another time during A time just not connected to sleep? Or should a 5 month old be able to go 4 hrs even if ebf?
Thanks!

I'm BFing my third baby now. She is 4 months and lasting slightly more than three hours. None of mine ever made it to 4 hourly feeds and I think a lot of BFing mummies find that

Our EAS tended to look more like EAEAS and I did tend to top up before nap to make sure they didn't wake hungry and then be OT too!!   Just avoided feeding to sleep as much as possible.

HTH x

So maybe nurse on waking,  then 1.5 hr later (which would be .5 hr before nap) which would mean a 2.5 hr stretch over nap time?

Yes,  it's definitely common for an EBF baby to need feeds more frequently than 4hrs. Some manage just fine but many (most?) need to feed more often until they are established on solids. It's because it's harder for some babies to take a big enough feed to last 4hrs and get all they need in just 4 daytime feeds (plus DF/NF). That could be due to mum's storage capacity or the size of baby's stomach. Plus breast milk is fully digested withing 1.5-2hrs of feeding.

I think your plan is a good one
