Game plan for a newborn....
« on: September 02, 2016, 05:03:20 am »
I've been working on full feeds for our 12 day old, but unsure what to do for nap times.  If he isn't feed or rocked to sleep, he just lays in his bed, looks around and then after 10mins or so cries for help.  He has always been a super alert baby.  The only way he will go to sleep is by being fed, rocked or in his car seat.  My accidental parenting alarm bells are going off.  Do I continue on like this for a bit longer seeing he is just little or what should I do? My other babies were happy to go to bed and self settle at thus age, and then needed help around 6 or 8 weeks.  Any ideas? This is new to me.

I should also put out he is experiencing silent reflux, but once asleep, he sleeps really well, not like my other silent reflux babies.

He is also a sucky baby desperately trying to suck his hand. I'm hoping once he finds it, things will be easier.

In the early days I used DR Harvey Karps 5S method (erm, swaddle, side, swing, suck, shush) it's similar to Tracy's 4S but the side and swing (it's like a tiny rocking) was like a magic wand had been waved.  I'd seen it work miracles on a whole line of babies on a TV prog years and ears before I had DS but the memory had stayed with me as it was so amazing!  Anyway, I know a few other long term BWers have also used it, it fits very well with BW.
There are on-line videos of the technique in action if you wanted to give it a try.

FWIW I did pat in the early days but I realised my DS was not really into patting and later discovered silent reflux so the patting maybe aggrivated that. The rocking which at times I would say was LOTS of rocking was easy to reduce and reduce like patting is and I was able to move him to his own bed and use a firm hand to slightly rock there and wean it with reduction and on-off. He was self settling early with me using this method of rocking rather than patting.  The film I saw of karp showed the rocking, it's hard to describe quite tiny in movement but almost "vigorous" or like a vibration or like the motion of a car. (karp uses very big swings if LO is not comforted by the very small 'swing' but I didn't need that...the method uses as little as is needed for LO to calm, same as BW).
Just a thought.
