16 month one nap only 1hr -1hr30 is this enough?
« on: September 29, 2016, 13:39:39 pm »
Hello,

My DS has just turned 16months, we have dropped to one nap 2 weeks ago as was getting EW and nap refusals. He now wakes between 6:15 and 7:00 which is better and goes to bed between 7 and 7:30pm.  His one nap I try to give early lunch and milk then 15mins or so play as usually poos after lunch!! TMI! and if doesn't then can wake early from nap with one although he occasionally does 2hrs he more often than not only does 1hr 15-1hr 30, is this enough with approx. 11hrs at night.  He wakes from nap crying and wakes in morning crying although happy once come in to get him.  I have tried giving him his dummy when wakes early from naps and if upset in morn and leave him for up to 30mins to see if will go back but rarely does it just stops the crying!!

approx. easy

7am 7oz milk,(if wakes before gets dummy till 7am ish)
8:30 toast and bit of porridge
Out to playgroup/park etc.
11:30 dinner, omelette and beans etc.
12 5oz milk
12:30/1 nap for 1-1hr 30
small snack 2:30
out for walk etc
4:30/5 tea, pasta etc
6pm bath and 8oz milk and into bed for night
Asleep between 7-7:30pm

Anybody spot anything I'm missing, seems tired as cranky after nap-bed and wakes from sleeps crying.  Can cry in night but settles on own quickly.

Thank you in advance!

Hi!

Hmmm, it doesn't sound like a lot of sleep for a 16mo...how much was he doing when on 2naps? Is the crying on waking new or has he always done that?

It could be adjustment to a one nap routine and getting some OT with it.  It might be worth trying an earlier BT if he only sleeps an hour in the day. Sometimes the nap settles and extends with just waiting it out and using EBT to avoid OT building up too much.

The other thing to try might be more of a wind down before the nap. Is it possible that the playing after lunch & before he goes for the nap is a bit too stimulating for a good sleep? Could you try stories or music in his room for the 15mins before the nap?

The other thing if you try those and he still doesn't sleep longer, would be playing around with the timing of the nap to see of an earlier or later nap (12 or 1pm) got a longer sleep.

A few things to try..hope that helps xxx

It doesn't sound much but could be ok. However if he has just dropped to one nap it seems rather OT to me than UT. However this is normal in nap transitions so whatever happens, it shall pass!:)

Being honest I would try from earlier nap as a start. DS dropped to one nap around 12mo as he was refusing 2nd nap but the max he could do was 12:00 with 6:30/7am wakeup. Sometimes and in the nursery we even did 11:45 as he was extremly tired. If nap is 1h have you try extending the nap? If nap is shorter have you tried occiasional APOPing of a second nap in the late afternoon like 4/4:30? For 15min?

Thank you, we have always struggled with short naps (30 mins with him), around 8 months he would do a morn nap of 1-1hr 30 and an afternoon nap of 30-45mins unless had a short morn nap then would have around an hour in the aft.  He has never been a great napper.  He settles to sleep on his own in his cot in a very dark room with white noise so doesn't hear 3.5yr old so much.  I have tried extendeding nap with dummy but just lies there quietly sucking but doesn't go back to sleep!

Would try an earlier nap but struggle with what to do about dinner and its nice to get out and go somewhere in the morn, come back and put him down after dinner. Worry if put him down earlier he is awake even longer in the afternoon, he will go to bed earlier sometimes (usually takes 30mins of mooching round cot, playing with comforter befero sleep), however, gets up a bit earlier the next day.  I wanted to stop two naps as was refusing the aft one so was awake for a really long time before bed, he has started slipping in a bit since dropped to one nap and now usually does 11 to sometimes 11.5 hours.

It sounds ok to me (I have LSN boys, but a straw poll of the birth club thread a couple of weeks ago had a lot of babies of 9-10mo on 13-13.5hrs of sleep in every 24hrs).

I would say that if he activity was from let's say 6am till 10:30 and now he goes to sleep at 12:30 so 2h later he might be OT. I would try a nap a tad earlier and check what happens!

I would never get him up at 6am he gets his dummy and get him up at 7am earliest, he lies there quietly and seems to try to go back to sleep but then ultimately poos!

Yes Honey - I get it. I just try to compare your activity times from 2naps schedule to current 1nap schedule. A it seems you increased them much and maybe that's why he is OT for his nap.
