What to do with naps
« on: October 08, 2016, 13:49:20 pm »
Cruz the past two days has woke up at 5am but gone back down till 6am he's gone for his first nap at like 9.45 woke around 11ish he's then wide awake and not ready to nap until at least half 2 but even then he's not tired but he needs to get a cat nap in or he won't last till bedtime around 6/6.30
He's 9 months on the 12th
What's he's awake time now they still need the two naps don't they but are they meant to be long ones what time should I wake him from his cat nap if his bedtime is 6.30pm
He's still waking in the night to x

Hi

This is quite a common age for the 2-1 to start and one of the naps starts to shorten.

Have attached a couple of links for you which may be of help

Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

What are his NW like? Chatty, crying?

When babies begin the process of dropping a nap the amount of night sleep they get often drops so he may have been having maybe 12 hours and now isn't. He's getting 11hrs which  is still good.
EW can also mean the first nap needs pushing a little later so maybe try extending that first A time by 15minutes to begin with.
Just giving a later BT rarely works when trying to fix EW and often causes OT (which is another cause of EW) Instead you would need to push his whole day forward to get a later bedtime so naps and feed times would move as well and again you do in increments until you get to the BT you want.

Hi only had time to have a quick skim. Unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do if he's falling asleep in the buggy on the way home. Frustrating isn't it! Maybe you could try giving him a snack to eat whilst  walking home to try and keep him going?

The days he's doing an A just under 4hrs is when he's napping best. I would make it 4hrs and stick to that for a few days, so put down in his cot at 3.50 giving him 10mins to fall asleep.

Once that nap lengthens you can then fix the afternoon one around it. Also those NW, he seems to be snacking on his feeds you're offering. Have you tried stopping he milk and just giving water?
Is he teething at all? That can really disrupt nights x

Thanks Hun I think a snack on the way home could be a great idea actually yeh I think he's just snacking on his milk at night i have tried water a few times but I'm going to try again with a 4 hour awake time my only problem is I won't fit it all into a day like if he's up at 6 then his nap for 10ish his next nap won't be due till say 3ish if he only has a hour and then he won't be tired enough for bed !
Yeh he is teething he's cut one bottom one sure he has to have the next one on the way

I'm looking forward to when he's down to just the one decent nap a day lol
With stopping night feeds would u just stop them cold turkey and offer water and not milk at all x

Is he on 3 full meals a day now? Maybe up the amount of solids as the tea of 1/2 yoghurt for example might not be enough?
Once those daytime calories have increased you could then drop cold turkey and just give water x

Oh yeh he's on three solid meals he hs a full yoghurt as well as his tea :) he will have what we're having mainly or sometimes 1/2 of a jar and a yoghurt
He has one wetabix for breakfast or ready break something like that I've started giving a little snack as well and lunch is mainly a mix of finger foods x
He's gone of his milk again lately and not drinking very much x

Yes both my girls started going off their milk at this age. We was still doing a DF at 9 months and once I'd got her down to 3oz I dropped it then cold turkey.

Both my other boys just dropped there feeds there selves at night I think I just worry if I don't offer him milk he will be awake for ages lol he shares a room with my 4 year old but thankfully he doesn't seem to wake him he has 3/4 bottles a day depending on how he is but he isn't drinking much at all now we have never done a dream feed. Xhosa does great and only wakes once then he will go and wake 2/3 times and ino he's not waking for milk it's just I find it easier putting a bottle in his mouth as he normally goes back to sleep but he doesn't even have a ounce most the time x

Sounds like he's using it as a comforter rather than being hungry. It probably is time to get rid of it but I know it's easier said and totally understand you not wanting to disturb his brother x

I defo agree so he's woken up 11.15pm after going to bed at nearly 6.15pm that's only like 5 hours I no he doesn't need a bottle he use to go much much longer like 6pm - 3am sometimes 4 the older he's got the worse his sleep has became I went in I offered water he didn't want so I lay him back down I came out he's been having a little babble and a moan he's gone quiet for now
Ino I need to keep strong so if he keeps crying etc I just keep offering water
He's learnt to pull himself up the last few days aswell and is starting to try and cruise round which I. I can all affect sleep can't it x

So he must of went back to sleep til 12.15am wen he started moaning again I thought maybe he's really hungry as he didn't have much milk yday so I made him a bottle I went in and he was stil practically asleep lying down i think I sometimes go into soon but he's so loud when he's moaning and babbling anyway I have him his bottle which he wasn't even really interested in he had 3oz that's stil just a snack isn't it
He then went back to sleep til 5.20 when he woke up he come in with me til 6 when we got up I just wish he would sleep til 6 in his own cot like he use to I really don't want to keep bringing him in with me but the thought of getting up so early is horrible I don't mind getting up at 6 anything before is still night time lol x

This really is a horrible age for sleep I find. Learning to stand and cruise definitely affect sleep. My dd2 is 10 months and her sleep has been off since around 9 months. She used to be able to self settle easily and now every night needs some help.
Yes 3oz would be a snack I'd say. Does he have a comforter? maybe introduce something to replace the bottle that might help him.
Have you tried giving any medicine to make sure it's not discomfort from teeth?

Bless them he's got a comforter but never uses it just stays at bottom of cot my last baby loved his so I will try get him to use it it took 20 mins for him to settle for his nap little monkey kept standing up his cot x
He still only got up and drunk 3oz he is normally due around 10am for bottle but he's asleep and we've been trying to drop it as e doesn't really touch it instead he has a little snack and the lunch after picking my toddler up from nursery
Is 3 bottles a day ok at this age my hv seems to think he should be on 3 I don't want to miss a bottle if he needs it but he doesn't really touch it anyway x
