capping naps or not?
« on: November 25, 2016, 07:17:30 am »
Hi!

I got such great help here when my lo was 7 months and didn´t nap well and nowshe´s 9 months and I have kind of the opposite problem! Her A-time has recently been increased to 3,35h and now her day gets quite long when she sleeps well. I´m wondering if I should shorten the naps to make the day shorter and night longer and if I should do I do a little of both or just one? I´ve had to wake her up from a nap I think a total of five times since she was born beacause we struggled so much with sleep så now I´m really reluctant to do that when she´s sleeping so well...but when bedtime got really late one day (20:30) she just woke up earlier the next day and only got 9,5h sleep. I´m not sure how long she needs to sleep at night ideally. my thought is 7-7:30 day but then i have to wake her up, or maybe she just needs to adjust to the longer days as she did with the naps?  ??? thankful for any input!  :)

yesterday
6:15 wu
09:55-11:15 S
15:50-16:05 S (woke her up so as to not get such a late bedtime)
19:40 S

6:25 wu (maybe fell asleep again til 7 or at least tried)

Is this correct that the second nap was only 15 mins?

OK. In that case I would suggest capping one nap and keeping the other long.  It is really your choice which to cap and which to keep long.  You may prefer to cap the second nap as you are already doing this so just reduce by 15 mins and allow the first nap to be as long as she wants.
7 to 7.30 day is fine if this is something she has shown in the past she can do regularly as routine.  You might find that some time during the journey towards dropping a nap she might need a slightly later BT, I probably wouldn't go later than 8pm though.
if she is going down for those two naps without a fight I would continue to start them at the same time but end the second nap 15 mins sooner, this will increase the A time to BT by that 15 mins also and should help to get her to sleep on time for BT rather than fussing or refusing at BT.

Hope this helps.
