18 month old always wakes crying
« on: November 30, 2016, 15:25:04 pm »
Hello,

My  18 month old DS wakes in the morning and from naps crying!

He approx. routine is

wakes crying hard between 6-7am and get given dummy till 7am.  Usually is around 6-6:30 (sometimes goes back for 30mins, most times just rests quietly with dummy)
Milk then breakfast
Playgrounp etc and dinner
between 12:30-1pm nap (used to have 1hr 30 but now can wake after 30mins [rare] and 1hr-1hr 30 crying so again give dummy and leave for half an hour.
up, snack, play, tea,
Bedtime, left between 6:45/7pm, usually takes 30mins of rolling around etc till fast asleep (video monitor so can see him!)
Sometimes hear him cry before midnight but don't normally go in.

He self settles for naps within 10mins and within 30mins at nightime on own with lovey.

Makes me sad that wakes so unhappy and I think its because he's still tired that's why give him a dummy and leave for a bit as if very rarely wakes nearer to 7 or after seems to wake much happier!

He isn't stood up crying, he is still laid down.  I wonder if ive started something bad with giving him dummy when wakes crying as we got rid of his dummy at 6months as kept loosing and crying for it, however, cries so loud and long wakes 3.5yr old DD and she then gets a right grump after a couple of days of early starts! She will sleep 7:30-7 or sometimes later so lucky with her!  Not sure what to do.  I believe he needs more sleep but not sure how to help him get it as he's in a pitch black room with white noise already!!

Any help and advise appreciated!

Hi I think some babies just wake up grumpy, DS1 pretty much always woke up crying regardless of nap length.

Do you feel he's acting OT when he's up? Have you considered moving the nap a few mins later to see if a bit more A time helps?

He didn't use to, he would wake and play with lovey happily, now just wakes really upset.  sometimes after tea he can get upset easily and cry over the slightest thing.

I has been creeping to nearer 1pm and I know my mum sometimes doesn't put him down till nearer 2pm as shes too busy with him, however, I feel that is too long after waking around 6-6:30 (although I do leave him in cot till 7am).

Has he been through the 18 month sleep regression yet as that is a big thing?

Not sure, maybe that is what we are in the middle of, plus he has a cold so when wakes crying his dummy ususally settles him back, or keeps him quiet but with a notty nose he cant suck it properly!! Just woke up after 45mins crying hard so given dummy but I can see hes sat up so doubt will go back! will leave him there for 30mins unless gets upset so at least hes getting some rest!  Don't really want to put him to bed early as hes never done 12 hours at night so will just be up for the day earlier!

Could be that, plays havoc with sleep. 45 min naps are generally UT, sometimes just adding 10 mins to A time can help.
It's so hard isn't it, on the odd occasion a slightly EBT can help combat OT and reduce EW.

I did try an earlier bedtime and had him in bed at 6:30, asleep at 6:45 but neighbours dog go into our garden and barking right outside his window so at 7pm was really upset and I had to go in and give him a cuddle to calm him then put him down again.  Went to sleep again quickly but hope not a broken night now!

Is it ok if he only gets approx. 11hrs at night and 1-1.5 in a nap during the day so around 12-12.5 total sleep? I was worried that this isn't much as 3.5 year old can do a 12hr night.

Not all do that lovely magical 12 hour plus night my DS1 never did he was 2 hour nap 10.5/11 hour night. You may find if it is the SR then the nap may lengthen and or nights at some point.

Update, had 45mins in car on way there, woke at 12:30 then hard to say bye and get away (took ages!!) put them into pj's and left around 7:15pm, DD fell asleep on way home but he was wired and kept messing with his feet in sleepsuit and blanket put over him and playing peek a boo, so DD was really good, him not so, was 40min is journey home and was still chattering when pulled up!! put him straight up to bed and took another 15mins or so to go to sleep so asleep around 8:15pm
