Baby waking in the night last 3 weeks
« on: December 21, 2016, 14:02:07 pm »
Hi there

My 8.5 month old has started waking at night in the last few weeks. He was previously sleeping reallly well - all night, no waking - and now wakes 1-2 times a night. Each time I have to go and sit with him to go back to sleep, he resettles extremely quickly, he holds my hand and I tell him it is time to sleep. I suspect it is separation anxiety - he is also moving around too. Are there others experiencing similar? I did PU/PD with him and he settles well in his cot and I use my voice to soothe him and put a hand on him as he finds this comforting and likes to hold my hand. I am hopeful that he will go back to sleeping through again - he did so a few nights ago then back to waking again.

A typical day atm:

E: 6.30-7am
A
S 10-11am (awake time anywhere between 3-4 hours atm, sometimes more)
E 12-1pm
A
S 3-4.30pm (Short catnap only)
E 4-5pm
E 6.30pm (BT feed)
A
S 7-7.30pm

I am just wanting to make sure that I am not doing something wrong?

Hi

Just to check how long is his afternoon nap, 1.5hrs or a short nap?

AFternoon nap is always a catnap now. My son is dropping his sleep pretty quickly and only takes a short catnap...

Hi!

It seems to be very common around this age that LOs begin waking. Your post is very common lately I've noticed.

I believe it is most def SA as my LO went through it too. Usually a hand on his bottom did the trick. Also, new found mobility! Many babies begin standing or crawling etc. Keep in mind there is also a regressions said to be around 9-11 mths or so.

EASY looks just fine to me :)

I would also consider medicating for meds if you find teething might be the culprit too ;) !

How is he upon waking at head NWs? Upset? Cry? Happy/calm? Unsettled? Anything new in his routine that you can think of? New foods, sleeping arrangements?

My boy has started pivoting and rolling about so definitely more mobile.  When I settle I put a hand on him and that's all he needs. Resettles quickly, I can feel heart beat slow as soon as I put my hand on his chest. Nothing else has changed - everything okay except I weaned swaddle but that went easily....

Did the NW start as the afternoon nap became shorter?

An hours nap in the morning and then a catnap in the afternoon doesn't seem much for an 8 month old? I'm wondering if he's a little OT?

Like pp mentioned though there are regressions around this age.

No he has been doing this short afternoon nap since way before, it has been habit for ages. Never affected sleep, he has always been low sleep needs. Think it's separation anxiety as nothing else has changed... I'm not back to work or changed sleep routine other than he is slowly increasing awake time (I read his tired signs, not going by schedule)...

Well it seems every area is covered! Perhaps it is simply developmental and will fade with time.

Hugs and happy holidays! Hope this small bump passes quickly ;)

I hope it is just developmental. Sadly last night was the worst night we have had so far, he was awake 3 hours :( He has never done this before and I am hopeful that he won't do it tonight but he has just woken after 2 hours 45 minutes after put down. Here's hoping tonight isn't as bad.
He eventually went back to sleep and wasn't upset until the 3rd hour and then I had to hold him to sleep after which he woke again after 40 minutes then slept until a little later than usual this morning.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, there is a large front tooth that has cut through.
